Book Description

January 13, 2006
Amanda Callaway Mitchell is happy with her life. She?s married to a wonderful man, a handsome former professional football player. She?s a mother of two delightful children, and a seasoned flight attendant of thirty-one years with Elite World Airlines. Today, the only thing on Amanda?s mind is commuting from her home in Sarasota, FL to Atlanta so she can work a flight to Rio de Janeiro. This isn?t her regular trip?she swapped with another flight attendant in order to be free for her daughter?s sixteenth birthday party. It is a beautiful day, but don?t be fooled, it is the quiet before the storm. God has another plan for Amanda that was to rock her world...her plane never made it to Rio. Instead, the Captain was forced to make an emergency landing in Jacksonville, FL, one hour after take-off, with the right wing and tail on fire and smoke in the cabin. Caught up in a fiery flight and paralyzed with fear, Amanda?s mind drifted to a safe place, a diary she kept of the good ol? days?chronicling her life and the lives of five of her best stewardess girlfriends. They were young, beautiful and left no stone unturned as they battled racism, sexism and drug abuse at 37,000 feet. They had countless love affairs that left them unfulfilled and out of control. They fought like cats and dogs among themselves, but always had the other?s back. They shared joy, heartbreak and pain; and there was plenty of each to go around. They lived life in the fast lane. However, as they found out, there?s a price to pay for living in the fast lane?some paid with their lives. Please, sit back, relax and enjoy the flight.

Flying high was a great read! Rubys really outdone herself with an engaging and well-developed cast of characters, lots of action and suspense. This is one of my favorites of hers that I've read so far. It's definitely worth the read!

This review is from: Flying High: Diary of a Flight Attendant (Paperback)
Ruby Jeans Jackson tells a fascinating story in FLYING HIGH. After graduating from college, Amanda applied to and was hired by Elite World Airlines. Being a stewardess was the most glamorous job Amanda could imagine having. The training was stringent and exacting and some women never made it. Those who did were stationed with a monster of a boss who watched their every move. In spite of it all, the girls managed to have a lot of fun although some of it was pretty scary. Several of the beautiful young women hooked up with thugs who turned them into prostitutes on their runs to Los Angeles or Las Vegas. Sometimes they ran into trouble but the camaraderie and the companionship of the other flight attendants usually saved them from complete disasters. Some had affairs with pilots making it seem like one big orgy.

Finally, a married Amada, who now has two children, is scheduled for a flight to Rio de Janeiro. But they never make it; the pilot gets a message a terrorist wanted to blow up the plane and was forced to land in Jacksonville, Florida. Unfortunately, the plane explodes and Amanda and the rest of the attendants must prepare for whatever emergency presents itself. This is when we learn of Amanda's life as a flight attendant. Strapped into her jump seat, she reminisces about her long career in the flying business.

Ruby Jeans Jackson, a flight attendant herself, tells a fantastic story about the men and women we so frequently depend on as we travel from place to place. The characters are well developed and you find yourself loving and hating right along with Amanda. It is very realistic and totally believable.

I truly enjoyed the book Flying High by Ruby Jeans Jackson. If you ever wanted to know how a flight attendant lives on a daily basis and how they spend their free time when they aren't flying high then this is the book for you. Jackson does an excellent job of depicting the life of a flight attendant that keeps the reader interested from cover to cover. What is great about this diary of a flight attendant is that Jackson really makes you feel close to people who are in this diary and you feel as if you know them yourself. In no way was the book drawn out and cluttered with unnecessary information that will bore the reader. If you are looking for a book that is enjoyable, full of excitement, and entertaining then Flying High by Ruby Jeans Jackson is the right choice for you!
