This is what childhood should be like...,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Flying Hockey Stick (Hardcover)
I firsr read The Flying Hockey Stick when I was six years old. My copy (recently lost, much to my dismay) was signed by my Mom and was given to me for my birthday. Anyway, the book is an adventrure story about a kid named Barnaby Jones who wants to fly. After trying MANY home made contraptions (many of which are pictured on the inside jacket cover), he comes up with one that works. A hockey stick, and umbrella and an electric fan, all taped together - thus the title of the book. Now it gets fun. Barnaby goes off on a series of adventures (using a VERY long extension cord!) and helps strangers in trouble. He rescues a woman from a fire, a captain from a sinking ship and an exporer from a pride of hungry lions (conveniently distracted by a couple of bags of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches!), then takes them all home. Unlike most children's books, which would have ended there, The Flying Hockey Stick has a wonderful suprise ending. This is one of my all time favorite children's books and I'm hoping that Amazon can get me another copy since mine disappeared during one of my moves. My son is only 1 year old, but when he's old enough to read, I want him to have a copy of this book. John K. Lerchey lerchey@andrew.cmu.edu

This delightful story consistently brings instant smiles to the faces of young children. Jolly Rodger Bradfield's masterful storytelling ability captures the undivided attention of listeners/readers. Over my past 33 years as an educator, I have shared this book with literally thousands of children. The response is always the same, joy!

I read this book along with Benjamin Dilley's Thirsty Camel and Pickel Chiffon Pie when I was little. These are the best kids books and promote imagination and fun. I would recommend these to any parent for their child. You can't go wrong with these books!

This book has the most wonderfully creative, gentle humor! Parents, you will love reading this to your child! Grandparents, uncles, aunts, really anyone will enjoy the delightful illustrations and the good storyline. Your child will never forget this storyline. The author, Jolly Roger Bradfield, wrote many wonderful stories that should be in every Kindergarten through 2nd grade classroom. Pickle Chiffon Pie teaches girls to grow up to be smart, funny, and discerning... it's message is basically looks aren't everything, so please choose someone for yourself who is kind and considerate and tender hearted. Yes, it's a message we could all love! Giants come in Different Sizes needs to be put back in print as well... loved it.

A reprint of a classic. The story line and illustrations are as artistic as they are timeless. They keep the attention of my 5 year twins as well as they kept mine 40 years ago. This book inspires imagination.

I bought this book for my 4th grader because he loves hockey and is not a big reader. He loved the story. It is designed for K - 2, but it is a cute story with lots of creativity. My 4th grader reads it and then talks about how not feasible it would be to do that.

I'm glad that they are republishing Jolly Roger Bradfield's books. I had this book when I was a child. I remember loving it then, and getting it now to share with my children is even better. The artwork is fun and creative. The storyline is imaginative and when I read it to my children, I can see their minds working. I definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a good children's book!

This is a book that my Grandpa used to read to me as a child every time I went to visit him. It brings back great memories and I couldn't wait to share it with my kids. I also bought one for him as a Christmas present, as I have found that his copy has gone missing. LOVE THIS BOOK! - Also, came very fast in perfect condition!

My kids (3 & 6 yrs old) love this book! We have a TON of books at our house and this one gets read over and over again. The illustrations are awesome--fun for all of us to stare at and study. (I also love the length of this book--substance without being so wordy that I dread requests to read it before bed!) I'm going to buy more copies to have on hand as birthday presents--I'd say it's ideal for girls or boys ages 2-7. Such a fantastic book to fuel the imagination of little ones!
