Format: Hardcover
Jewel Sample creatively offers parents and adults a unique and thoughtful approach to help children who are coping with unexpected tragedy. In her book, Flying Hugs and Kisses, Sample introduces readers to Baby Will, the newest member of the family. Will's older siblings remind us that children can embrace the concept of boundless love when Sally starts the "I Love You This Much" game and says, "We love Baby Will all the way to heaven and back," as she jumps up and down during playtime. Baby Will receives a lot of love and attention. His family could be like many other families. What is important about this story is that Baby Will's life ends unexpectedly due to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). The realism of events portrayed by Sample may be very similar to what other families experience with the unexpected death of a child, parent, sibling, or other family member. Mom's factual explanation in the hospital to the other children is straightforward about death - "When someone's body does not work it means they have died. This is what happened to Baby Will. It also means that Baby Will can not open his eyes, cry, smile, and drink his bottle or wet his diaper anymore." The story may be helpful to parents and children during a difficult time, because in their grief, we see a family take a unique, active approach that helps the entire family cope with their loss. Flying Hugs and Kisses introduces the concept of spirituality and heaven and combines it with "I Love You This Much" to offer other families possible ideas when coping with an unexpected death.

Flying Hugs and Kisses by Jewel Sample is a perfect tool for sharing with youngsters who don't understand death. It is enlightening especially for children who are bereft from the loss of a sibling. The book specifically refers to SIDS; Sudden Instant Death Syndrome. The story and illustrations depict a family that loses their baby brother. The adults are desolate and their offspring confused because Baby Will was healthy before he went to sleep.

Here is where the heart-breaking diagnosis of SIDS is explained in a way that little ones can understand. The family works together to accept the tragedy as they learn to function and move on. And "move on" they do, because the children are the ones who discover a distinctive way to embrace their sorrow, and they can observe it in a joyful way forever.

The young characters in the book are downhearted which could act as vehicle for getting little ones to talk about what they, too, are feeling. I can see this as a tool for interaction and dialogue with any grieving family. The illustrations are excellent and full of expression, and they alone could prompt conversation. Questions such as "Why are their faces so sad?" could encourage a dialogue with youngsters about how they feel, too. One question leads to another, such as this: "When was another time in your life that you felt sad?"

Flying Hugs and Kisses targets Christian families but I can see any faith adapting it to the meet the needs of children who have lost a sibling. It is short, brightly colored, cheerful and it handles a difficult subject with grace. It's the kind of book that can be read over and over which appeals to all little kids.

When our son died after 37 days of a blissful life, one of the many difficult aspects of it was how to tell our 2 yr old. This book was a great help. We have followed the action of hugging & kissing helium balloons & letting them go, sending them to her brother. It was a great way to mark his birthday, and to do anytime she wants. It inspired me to write the story of her & her brother as well, because our circumstances are so different from the book. As a starting point for helping a child deal with the death of a sibling, this book was great.

This is a must have book for every family library. At some point families all have to deal with the stress of death, be it a baby, child or adult. This book is highly informative in such a kind and loving way. It can be used as a teaching tool or just a treasure of love to a friend or family in need. Jewel Sample is a compassionate story teller and wonderfully creative in getting the job done. Ms. Sample's story Flying hugs and kisses is deeply appreciated.
