Mind Expanding Soundscape Music for My Inner Self,

This review is from: Flying Toward the Sound (Dig) (Audio CD)
I have always loved Geri Allen and her ministrations on the piano. This work is all Geri as she expresses her assimilation of the masters before her and synthesizes her own experiences, knowledge, and wisdom into these sonic adventures that have a way of drawing me into my own inner journeys.
On every repeat playback of this CD, there is an unfolding of new revelations of this artist's immense command of her instrument and the finesse of her ability to reveal what flows from her soul to the outer world via the worlds longest grand pianos, the F-278 (9ft) and F-308 (10ft) Fazioli pianos! What a match!! This CD is a masterpiece of the dedication of artist and her evolutionary growth and flowering. Be prepared to get goose bumps!

Geri Allen Always Surprises Me,

Geri Allen overshadows all of the pianists in her generation, not by miles, but by worlds. Her latest album, a solo, provides such sensitivity and gentile finesse, that at times, it feels like Ms. Allen and the gift of her hands glide over you, through you, and surrounds you with technique and style unknown since the high points of McCoy Tyner's and Mary Lou Williams' piano inventiveness and brilliance. As the artistic director of the Mary Lou Williams Collective, the inner light of Ms. Williams on Geri's work is so apparent. Two women who chose the piano as their instrument, their voice to share who they are with the world come together as one with this remarkable recording. With the departure and great loss of Ms. Williams in 1981, passing the baton on to Geri Allen was only a natural and sensible thing to do. Ms. Allen coalesces the many musicians with whom she's performed; their ideas, their own voices and meshed them together with her now highly mature abilities. "Flying Toward the Sound" is what Geri Allen indeed does. Using her piano as a magic carpet, Geri Allen flies into the stratosphere of jazz, giving jazz another definitive moment for future musicians of all types to learn from. What beautiful sounds float through the air, reaching out to the listener, to me, demanding that I cease whatever I'm doing to turn my attention to the works of this greatest of pianists today. Geri Allen's climb to the peak of this enormous mountain of music and musicians has now arrived with this extraordinary album, "Flying Toward the Sound." Mary Lou Williams is surely smiling in the heavens as she looks upon her successor as one of the greatest of greats in jazz; in jazz piano.

Music that holds the mind in a tight grip,
By Bertrand Vermeer (Netherlands, Europe) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Flying Toward the Sound (Dig) (Audio CD)
A widespread rumour about the artist Geri Allen is that her recordings under own name are less in quality than those made as a side-woman. Indeed, her contributions on CD's like -for instance- The Year Of The Dragon with Chalie Haden and Paul Motion, on Reggie Workmans Cerebral Caverns, or that together with Dutch alto/soprano-sax player Tineke Postma are outstanding in a way that, when accidentaly listening with a half ear, your attention is immediately caught when Geri Allen rises out of the mix of musical sounds: it is impossible to ignore her contributions.
This solo-CD has the same effect on the beholder, and so counters the above-mentioned reputation. It is a highly concentrated, very intense music-making that holds you in a tight grip without interruption. It is light, almost dancing music, but...with strong wings. As strong as Geri Allens personality seems to be, with never ending creative inventions, though inspired by famous predecessors on piano. And, not unimportant, what a fine recording-quality and beautiful grand piano. You seldom find that in jazz combined.
