Product Description
The Northrop YB-49 was America's first jet powered flying wing. It was designed as a long range heavy bomber for the Strategic Air Command. It was powered by eight turbine engines. It's first flight was on October 21, 1947 and two years later the YB-49 Program was canceled. The reason is still obscured in aviation history. Some say certain people wanted the B-36 Bomber, others felt the newly formed Air Force was not ready for such a radical aircraft design such as a Flying Wing Aircraft. However, 40 years later Jack Northrop's dream came to life again as the B-2 Flying wing Bomber.
The second part of this exciting aviation documentary is the story of Edward's Air Force Base. It was named after Captain glen Edwards, who was chief of fight test for the Northrop Flying Wing. On June 5, 1948, Captain Edwards was killed testing the YB-49 at Muroc Air Force Base in California. Shortly thereafter the name was changed to Edwards Air Force Base. In the documentary, you will see many of the aircraft that were tested at the base during the last 50 years. A real fascinating look a some of America's greatest aircraft, some that made it to eventual squadron service, others simply forgotten.
