An essential book for any airline pilot,
By Shane A. White (Marietta, GA.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Flying the line: The first half century of the Air Line Pilots Association (Hardcover)
This book is an essential read for any current or aspiring airline pilot, especially an ALPA member. It is also a good read for anyone interested in the Air Line Pilot's Association. It is sometimes dry when dealing with ALPA's internal politics, but overall, the book is both enlightening and entertaining. As an airline pilot, I was shocked to read what my peers who shaped ALPA into what it is today sacrificed for the good of their fellow pilots. I was also shocked at the greed of some people, both management and individual pilots alike, in labor struggles and strikes of the past.

Very good book. The book primarily documents the history of ALPA but also gives a good historical overview of the airline industry. The book gives perspective to current issues confronting aspiring airline pilots and is vital to their education. An essential resource together with George Hopkins' other volume about ALPA.

Must read for all professional pilots - because when it comes to salary, pilots are their own worst enemy. While CEO's and VP's have continued to suck all of the profit out of their companies, pilots, the day to day suppliers of direct services to the clients.........have decreased their real incomes and professional worth by 100% over the past 10 years. Pilots wake up!

This is part of a mandatory reading list for aspiring airline pilots as well as the established line pilot. The message is clear. The importance of safety, lifestyle, and unity amongst flying professionals is proved story after story in this book. The airline pilot profession has a short, but rich history and this book gives a solid foundation to build on.
