Oversized Tribute to Boeing's Legendary Flying Fortress!, May 26, 2011
This review is from: The Flypast Book of the B-17 Flying Fortress (Paperback)
Sometimes I think there have been as many books written about the B-17 as there were Flying Forts produced! (There were over 12,730 B-17s of various models manufactured, by the way). In any case, back in 2002 Robert Rudhall and FLYPAST MAGAZINE put together this nicely-done coffee-table (10x14') tribute to Boeing's classic bomber.
In ten nicely-illustrated chapters, THE FLYPAST BOOK OF THE B-17 FLYING FORTRESS takes the reader on a guided tour of a B-17, examines B-17 production and development, provides comprehensive bios of Mighty Eighth B-17 groups and airfields, spotlights 8th AF B-17 nose art, summarizes the B-17 on the silver screen, looks at surviving Flying Forts and so on. I especially enjoyed the sections on B-17 survivors and the 8th AF Bomb Group summaries.
The book is wonderfully illustrated with hundreds of vintage and contemporary b&w and color photographs. Many of the contemporary color shots, especially the air-to-air pix, were taken by Duncan Cubitt who has a wonderful photographic eye when it comes to B-17s.
Though some of the information and photos in Rudhall's book are old hat, the new material - and the way it's presented - makes for enjoyable reading. If you're a B-17 fan, you'll probably want this book. Fair warning: New copies are pricey at $67.00. Recommended.
