Book Description

2007
It's been a year since Septimus Heap discovered his real family and true calling to be a wizard. As Apprentice to Extra Ordinary Wizard Marcia Overstrand, he is learning the fine arts of Conjurations, Charms, and other Magyk, while Jenna is adapting to life as the Princess and enjoying the freedom of the Castle. But there is something sinister at work. Marcia is constantly trailed by a menacing Darke Shadow, and Septimus's brother Simon seems bent on a revenge no one understands. Why is the Darke Magyk still lingering?

4.0 out of 5 stars entertaining and cute, don't prefer narrator, September 22, 2009

I really loved the first Septimus Heap book, and this one is still very entertaining, but it's not quite as good as the first. The story isn't as tight, and especially the end seems to go on a bit. It doesn't have the same spark as the first one did--it was so cute how Sage would give the perspective of practically every minor character and even some inanimate objects, and in this book, she doesn't do that as often and I miss it.

What really affected my opinion of the book, however, is that I didn't prefer the narrator, Gerard Doyle. I had gotten used to Allan Corduner's way of reading each character in the first book, that it took me a while to get used to Doyle's voice. Doyle reads the material with more of a whine, versus Corduner who was more good-natured about things.

So, good book though not as charming as the first, and I miss Allan Corduner.
