The bass has impact and great extension, but it is tight and very well balanced.

Full disclosure: I am a huge Focal fan. I have equipped my cars with full Focal speaker systems and have nothing but praise for the sound quality. My friend owns a pair of Focal Utopia Be speakers and they are downright stunning in music reproduction. So my purchase of the Focal Spirit One was based on what I have come to expect from their traditional HiFi offerings.

With that out of the way, let me say that I am extremely excited Focal decided to pursue the audiophile headphone market. If you are not familiar with Focal, they are a French manufacturer of audiophile home and car speaker systems. It was a longtime desire of mine to someday see Focal produce a pair of headphones that would provide the quality listening experience that is known for their existing products.

Well, when I learned that they finally did, I literally JUMPED and purchased a pair from Amazon.

Let me cut to the chase. The headphones have potential, but there are some problems.

First, when I received my order, I immediately connected them to my iPhone 4 to get an overall idea of what they sounded like straight from the box before any break-in. Unfortunately, I encountered problems.

First problem was an obvious rattle in the right driver. It happened during bass reproduction at normal listening levels, I definitely wasn't pushing the volume by any means. I had to even change tracks, and switch to my other pair of headphones (Grado SR-80, B&W P5, Monster Beats Solo) to make sure the music I was listening to wasn't actually recorded that way. Unfortunately the Spirit One was the problem. After researching this problem online, I saw others had experienced the same.

The other issue was with the cord.

I own these (bought from Amazon) and love them!
I listen to classical, new age, jazz, electronic and old skool rap... All sound true to the version of the tracks, no distorted bass or pumped midrange.
NIN dual disc of The Downward Spiral sounds incredible on these headphones!

Design:
Modern. These headphones combine a matte black finish, brushed-aluminum, plastic finish. With a red coloring inside the ear cups for a look that's very stylish. Weight is good, not heavy.

Audio Quality:
Not Bassie, like the Beats or Soul, but they sound deciding better.

Focal Spirit One frequency response is Quite Flat, lends towards somber tones. The louder the better, no noise distortion at greater volumes. Harmonic distortion curve at high volumes (94 dB SPL @1 KHz).

Comes with:
A soft case to protect heahphones. The headphones and an mp3 player will fit well in this case while traveling. Soft case is a designed slim for easy travel, headphones fold flat.
A soft cloth bag for everyday use.
A airplane adaptor is included.

I do enjoy the quality of the audio on the Spirit One, give them a listen you wont be disappointed.

I'll cut to the chase and just say that I bought my Focal Spirit One headphones from a local Focal authorized dealer. They were the first generation Spirit Ones- and the sound was pretty mediocre. The treble distorted at moderate to high volume and the bass was not deep, but punchy. After about 6 months of use, I made the serendipitous mistake of using the original Focal hard case and apparently destroying the right driver.

I called Focal, and they were willing to exchange my set with a replacement. I shipped it out and received the new set 2 weeks later. The first thing I noticed on the new set right away was the hard case design. You will know if you have the 2nd generation Spirit One headphones if your hard case has two cylinder shaped cones projecting out where the cans sit. Apparently, this is to help prevent the compression of the drivers during transport.

The sound of the new set was COMPLETELY different. The clarity and power handling seems extremely better than my first set. The distortion of the treble only comes when I am near max volume which I assume would be from my audio source, and the bass is much deeper in sound. I assume they actually changed the design of the drivers, but I could be wrong on this.

At the end of the day, I am VERY happy with my purchase. I've been using the new headphones for almost a year now and they are still the best set of headphones I own today.

I played these in for about five days on average volume, shuffle through itunes (all genres) -- although they did sound great right out of the box. My listening rig is a Schiit Asgard amp receiving lossless files from an istreamer. Absolutely fabulous sound. They sound good straight from an ipod, but like most cans and buds do benefit from a good DAC and Amp combo. I have a portable amp that I use with my ipad and this improves the sound quality as well -- not much, but enough to notice.

The bass has impact and great extension, but it is tight and very well balanced. The high frequencies also have great extension without being fatiguing. Mids are perfectly balanced. Out of my collection (Ultrasone Pro 900s and 2400s, Beyer Custom One, and buds W4, UE900s/700s), these have the best sound profile. I believe all of my gear sounds great, by the way.

The frame is aluminum rather than plastic. The cord has a woven cloth sheath to reduce microphonics. Even the microphone control unit is housed in aluminum. Quality build from quality materials.

I have two complaints:
1. I don't like phone controls. They should make a model without.
2. The headphone cups are small, a bit too small for long term listening in my case, and the pads are not replaceable. They are ultrasoft faux leather, though. And they are

In the end, the sound and build quality justify the five-star rating. I just wish the cups were a tad larger or replaceable. And the option to buy without phone controls would be nice.
