This is not a greatly detailed work. You will not find a long discourse on how the the design arose, or the political troubles involved, the technical problems and bugs that arose (though you get quite a few of these), etc. What you will find is a sound technical description of each model of the FW 190, including sub-variants and the various prototypes. Each model description is accompanied by very good representative photographs of the model. In the case of the factory designed "field modifications" or rustsatze, fairly detailed drawings and photographs accompany each. In short, it is a very good introduction the aircraft. It is, according to the author, an attempt to update an earlier work, and though I do not own that earlier work, I feel it is probably as good or better than the earlier one. The style of this work is very similar to his work about the Messerschmitt Bf 109, so I think that comparison would be true.

Now for the "bad". This volume has no great number of photographs of combat aircraft. If you want to see the aircraft flown by ace pilot buy some of the Osprey books. You won't get any real amount of technical information, but you will get aces. The next step to take, if you want more technical detail, more political detail, and combat photographs MIGHT be to buy the 3 volumes by Deitmar Harmann (I can't be sure, as I only own one of the three, and it has been a few years since I read it). However, for a beginning primer, this is as good as any would be.
