A game of lights and shadows

CONTRAST is a platform/puzzle game where you can move between a fantastic 3D world and a mysterious shadowy universe in 2D in the blink of an eye. Delve into a dreamlike and surreal 1920s world, inspired by the performance art world of vaudeville and film noir, and cradled by a jazzy atmosphere.

In this universe, where the boundaries between showmanship, magic, intrigue and deception are blurred, you play Dawn, the imaginary friend of a young girl named Didi. You have the power to slip from the 3D dreamscape into the parallel 2D shadow world bound to it. Shed light on a shadowy story by manipulating light sources in the 3D world to distort, enlarge or stretch the 2D shadow world. Manipulating and shifting between light and shadow will be the key elements that help you solve the many puzzles that will test your gray matter!

4.0 out of 5 stars A contrast to typical gaming. November 18, 2013
Platform for Display:PC Download|Edition:Standard
I just finished this game on the PS4, and it's a wonderful little indie-game. I started the game somewhat half-heartedly, but got into it very quickly.

The concept is really fantastic, with the main character having to go in and out of shadows to accomplish objectives. The shadows are either present or have to be created by the player by manipulating light sources or objects. I am giving it 4 stars because of jittery movement every now and then when working in the light or in the shadows that made solving puzzles more difficult than necessary.

The soundtrack is nice, and the game has a nice, albeit short, story. The environmental graphics are really nice, and it is themed quite appropriately. It's a fun little game, and I would play it again.

The Good: Inventive shadow puzzles, gorgeous art direction, interesting story

The Bad: Extremely short, puzzles are too easy, lack of overall content, disappointing ending, many bugs and glitches, dated visuals

The idea of using shadows as puzzles is fascinating and Contrast has one of the most unique puzzle elements I have seen since Portal. Arranging objects in a room to make the shadows lay out just right to get to where you need can be very satisfying. Bringing objects into the shadow world and pulling them out is also very fun. The story as well is kind of touching. You play as Dawn who has a mysterious child friend, Didi, whose parents are going through hard times and she wants to bring them back together. Her father is always getting into debt trouble and decides to open a circus using a magician. Everything goes wrong for her father so it's up to her and Dawn to fix it all.

The story itself is pretty interesting but the ending sucks. It honestly just ends and you never find out what this mysterious shadow world is. Her and Dawn are the only people who are in the real world. Her parents talk to her on the walls as shadows. It makes me wonder if Didi has mental issues and is imagining all this? Is Dawn a figment of her imagination? No one else can see her but it's never explained. These mysteries can be frustrating at the end when they never make sense.

The game actually is poorly paced. There's a lot of little cut scenes that break everything up and it gets really annoying. You will walk ten feet, cut scene, walk ten more feet, scene, pull a switch, scene, solve an easy puzzle, scene, and it continues like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars superb indie puzzle game January 29, 2014
Platform for Display:PC Download| Edition:Standard|Verified Purchase
Contrast is a fantastic indie puzzle game where the player can move between an amazing 3D world and a mysterious shadowy universe in 2D in the blink of an eye. You play Dawn, the friend of a young girl named Didi. Dawn can slip from the 3D world into the parallel 2D shadow world bound to it. You will need this power during the game to solve enviromental puzzles. Dawn can manipulate light sources in the 3D universe to distort, enlarge or stretch the 2D shadow world. The music of the game is excellent, too and will take you back in the 1920s. I highly recommend this to everyone who likes puzzle games 9/10 from me.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Fun/Creative Puzzle Game December 19, 2013
Platform for Display:PC Download|Edition:Standard
Intro:

Contrast is a 3D puzzle platformer indie video game developed by Compulsion Games. It was released on November 15, 2013 on PlayStation 4 as one of the two free PlayStation Plus titles and will be released on November 19, 2013 for PlayStation 3.

Story:

This game is set in the 1920s. There are two main characters that you will follow during the story: Didi and Dawn. Didi is a young girl who wants to figure out why her parents are always fighting. You play as Dawn, who is an older girl that follows Didi around but cannot be seen by the rest of the world. Dawn helps Didi solve problems by being able to turn into a shadow on the wall. The main issue in the storyline is that Didi finds out that her father is in trouble with the mafia, so she wants to find a way to help save him.

Presentation:

The graphics in this game are nothing spectacular, though they are still very good. It is not meant to look realistic, however, and instead reminds me of several other cartoony games. The world looks fascinating as it takes place in an alternate dimension. The game also shines because of its classic 1920’s music. The story is delivered in interesting cutscenes because you can only see Didi, and everyone else appears to be shadows on walls. The rest of the story is told through a series of collectables you can find in the environment that hold valuable information which is useful in determining what in the world is going on. The voice acting is nothing short of perfect. I had no issues with any of the voice actors as they all made it really seem like they were from the time period.

Gameplay:

As I said before, you play as Dawn, who has the power to turn into a shadow on the wall.

It's too bad the game play doesn't live up to the visuals and audio, which are quite nice. It's also fairly short.
