Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
* I haven't encountered any bugs so far. I went through the forums and looked at what some are having trouble with. So I'm reviewing and informing at the same time.

So after a year since CXL was released by Monte Cristo, Focus Interactive releases Cities XL 2011. They promised some changes and a transit system complete with buses and trains (subway and elevated). The next generation city simulator gets a makeover with these much needed features. I liked CXL and was annoyed that Monte Cristo went bankrupt before it could implement its new ideas ie. G.E.M.'s Transit expansion, and a host of others. When Focus Interactive took over CXL, it seemed like a breath of fresh air and a new chapter for the city building genre.

Unfortunately, some (and for others, many) bugs from the original CXL and some new ones have marred it to the point where the forums are lit up by frustrated people. Focus has been quiet although they did fix a bug for steam users. I recently saw a post that Focus has no patches in place because they are working on releasing CXL '11 for other languages. It could be a while before we get any type of patch. They are also very quiet concerning CXL '11 and it's future. From my point of view, it seems like they are going to crunch numbers and see if it's viable to continue. Hopefully, they will. There has been no attempt at creating a city-building game after Simcity Societies (not including CXL). Simcity Societies was dreadful.

If you are familiar with Cities XL, buying the game online has your serial number emailed to you; and online activation. The download was pretty fast but bare in mind, I am using FIOS. Previously, Monte Cristo told me that I can load CXL on as many computers as I like, no limits. Focus doesn't mention it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy Before Patch Is Released! January 22, 2011
Verified Purchase
First the good news. This game is smart, engaging and beautifully rendered. I've played the various SimCity games since 1989 and this will be a worthy replacement.

Now the bad news. The game has numerous bugs. A review of the forums on CitiesXL and Simtopia show that I am not the only one with problems. Symptoms vary from person to person, but many consider the game "unplayable" in its current state.

I managed to grind out a few hours. It can actually be fun if you limit your use of certain features. I have found that you can minimize the crashes by (1) restarting often, (2) avoiding the inter-city trade and megastructure features, (3) not pressing any key for a few seconds before and after the background autosave and (4) disabling Vista desktop compression.

I was also surprised at the number of spelling and grammar errors in the tutorial and in-game messages. Even the most basic testing would uncover those.

I am shocked and disappointed that Focus released an (apparently) untested game. The game was released in October and a patch is still pending as of January. Although I got a few hours of gameplay, the experience is rather limited without advanced trade or large structures.

I'm looking forward to the patch, but I doubt that I'll buy another Focus Home Interactive game again after this experience.

3.0 out of 5 stars Buggy November 14, 2010
If you've played Cities XL you've played Cities XL 2011. It seems like an expansion pack as opposed to an all new game. This actually wouldn't be a bad thing if it didn't crash every 15-mins or so. Thus far I haven't seen any patches and that's a shame since the game is fun -- when it doesn't crash -- which happens every 15-mins or so. Let me add to that, at first it will seem fine, but once your city gets to a decent size then it starts crashing. Don't believe me? Check their user forums -- it's a widespread issue (and no I have zero mods on my system).

My advice would be to stick to Cities XL until they get some patches done, after all the game really isn't very different anyways.

---------

Dec 23 Update

Game still hasn't been patched and is basically unplayable once you have a large city since it constantly crashes. This is not a problem just with me, check their sites tech forum if you have any doubts. The game would be a 5-star game **IF** it didn't constantly crash.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best City Simulation Ever June 16, 2011
Verified Purchase
I'm playing this game on a relatively new Dell laptop, and I've downloaded all of the latest patches. I have not experienced any of the bugs or crashes that others have discribed.

That being said, the best one sentence synopsis I can give of this game is it is everything that Sim City 4 tried to be but couldn't. Sim City 4 was an extremely ambitious game that was released perhaps slightly before its time, but Sim City 4 also concentrated too hard on the micromanagement that started to become extremely tedious at the advanced stages of the game. That simply isn't the case with Citis XL 2011. I don't ahve to worry about building power lines or water pipes. All I have to worry about is whether or not my city has adequate power or water, and the citizens take care of the rest. Plus, Sim City 4 had some extremely unrealistic traffic expectations. It seems as if the traffic in Cities XL 2011 is much more realistic as well as being easier to manage. And the best part about this game is that the different cities all tie together into one big network. While that was the case in Sim City 4, it wasn't exactly seamless. In Cities XL 2011, the different cities run independently on each other, but they can trade resources in order to complement each other.

This is the game I've been looking for for quite some time. I've finally found it, and I've already wasted countless hours playing it.
