This is a feast of a book to come back to time and again.
Mr. Rik John Wells
There are hearts that people drew or made, as well as most of them naturally occurring in nature, like flowers and leaves shaped like hearts.

I received this lovely little book as a gift, and I find myself reaching for it often.

When I first saw the cover before it was released, I got the impression that it was just a collection of pretty photos. One night I spied it in a NYC bookstore and I immediately bought it, not knowing what to expect.

Boy was I wrong - it is an incredible collection of images. The main criteria is that they must contain anything that is shaped like a heart. Some are very obvious and some are not so obvious but you can view the obscure ones as a puzzle - trying to find the shape. Not all of them are in the same position - some are turned upside or sideways. Some are singles, and some are multiples.

I am absolutely amazed at the sheer variety of different ways that a heart can be viewed out in both natural and man-made world. Within the natural world, fhe photographers found the heart in the flowers, nuts, fruits, shells, clouds, leaves, water, island and even two jellyfish touching each other to form a heart shape. As for the man-made world, its photographers found a plethora of heart shaped forms from hoses, fences, woodcuts, sidewalks, chipped paint, graffiti, and even the traffic light. Some of them are either handmade or hand-assembled.

Interesting brief statements made by the photographers are included for some of the digital photos. And the cool thing about this book is that the contributors are from all over the world. It is so interesting to see how things looked differently through the camera lens.

But, there's one thing about this book that is not quite accurate - the title itself. As far as I am concerned, it's really more about the heart shape than love.

It is my understanding that it is the first in a photography series, and I am looking forward to the next one in this new series. It is a great book chockfull of visual candy!

This book has a lovely feel, the cover is great - quite tactile - and I love the square format.
When I first received my copy I tried to rush through, looking for my own contribution (Henna Heart, page 176), but had to keep slowing down to look at all the wonderful photographs others had contributed. I've now had a chance to look more closely at some of the others. What a treat!
Some photos are paired with others that compliment them, others have a page to themselves.
The range of subjects, angles, colours, is fabulous. This is a feast of a book to come back to time and again. Or a perfect gift for someone you love. Obviously.

It is quite amazing the way that our visual perception works. Once we have a certain image in mind, that same mind will contort almost any shape we observe until it fits our idea of that image. To some this may be evidence of our intrinsic propensity to see things the way we want to see them, but I find it to be a source of wonder when it comes to our imagination.

This wonderful collection of photographs makes that point much more eloquently than I could ever hope to put in words. All the photographs have one source of inspiration in mind: the simple old image of heart. The photographers that are featured were able to scour the World in search for hearts, and have found them in some of the most remarkable places. There are hearts in features of nature: lakes, ponds, clouds, various flowers and animals, etc. There are works of human hand that had not intended to create a heart but have nonetheless inadvertently done so. And then, of course, there are hearts that had been deliberately painted as such, but have been placed in some very unusual and surprising places. All the images in the end convey a single message: love is everywhere, you just have to pay attention and you'll find it. Or that's at least what I got away from this beautiful little book.
