4.0 out of 5 stars Great Teacher, July 7, 2007
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Focus Multimedia CM10THEDITION Chessmaster 10th Edition [windows 98/me/xp] (Video Game)
I got Chessmaster 10th Edition and so far I'm very pleased. After a long time away from the game of chess, I've started playing again. The tutorials are great and make learning the strategic and tactical theories of chess a breeze. My play has steadily improved as I apply the knowledge from the lessons. Chessmaster is an impressive teacher.

The chess mentor/training feature is also nice. It has a ton of features that let help you see what's going on the board so you don't blunder into stupid move. It also sharpens your analyzing skills so you play better when you play without the help of the chess mentor. Playing in chess mentor mode also allows you to play against opponents that would normally dominate you, thus allowing you grow as a player.

I only have two complaints. The animated chess sets are difficult to use; the interface becomes touchy when you use them. It's not a big deal, since there are 20-30 non-animanted sets to choose from. Also the analysis engine needs improvment. It does do a good job at picking up on the weak moves, but often times it doesn't register decisive moves that I made. Sometimes looking at the game chart (which charts the strength of each move), it looks like the loser won; it will show that the loser made the better moves throughout the game. Fritz is supposed to a better analyer, so maybe I'll try that someday.

In my opinion (forever forward) THE LORD GOD JESUS CHRIST is unbeatable!! He has done so much for me!! This program has healed me of all my problems (forever forward)!! My ratings are zero error now because of this program!! When I go on a website, I can tell if it is inflating my ratings or deflating it instead of telling me the truth!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Jewel Box edition won't run on XP, December 24, 2008
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Focus Multimedia CM10THEDITION Chessmaster 10th Edition [windows 98/me/xp] (Video Game)
I bought the 10th edition from Amazon and it works okay. But here is my review of the jewel box edition just to warn the reader what THIS product MIGHT be like.

Yes, I am very PO'd at ubisoft and here's why:

I spent three hours today and a couple of hours yesterday trying to get the jewel box edition to run on my computer. (Yes, I have too much time on my hands.) It did not run even though it expressly says on the product that it will run under Windows XP. No matter what I did--I installed it four times, ran all the patches from ubi, I tried various configurations--it would not run. Apparently ubisoft which currently owns the program doesn't care. Last patch was from 2004. Furthermore, their support site just gave me the runaround, requiring me to fill out forms and then redirecting me back to the same path without allowing me to contact them directly. Poor customer service is rampant these days of course, but I think ubi is worse than most.

By the way, I have Chessmaster 10th edition running on my Vista machine (with some minor problems). The irony is that although it is not designed for Vista, it runs on Vista but not XP.

I feel ripped off, but also sad because I have used Chessmaster since the first edition which I think was called Chessmaster 2100, which couldn't beat a class F player, and I have watched the program grow through many editions (some of which I still have) until it became unbeatable and a lot of fun to use with many interesting features. The fact that I cannot use it on my XP machine would be only sad, except for the fact that I paid cold hard cash for the program and can't get my money back.

Bottom line: R.I.P.O.F.F.
