Book Description

You may be thinking you don’t have time to dig into the Bible the way you want to—or the way you think you should. You may think that a deep study of scripture is only for the pastor, the seminary student, or the uber-spiritual.

You’re wrong—the “ordinary” Christian can learn to to study the Bible on his own.

The every-day believer can train her eye to discover the life-changing truths held in scripture.

You can dig into the Bible and find truths for yourself-all it takes is fifteen focused minutes.

In Focused15, I’ll show you how to look at scripture through a different lens each day. We’ll use tools already at our fingertips, with methods proven through history, with a structure that is easy to follow…

…all in fifteen minutes day.

If you are ready to take your personal Bible study to the next level, but not sure how, Focused15 is for you.

Using the Focused15 method of study, we will dive into 1 Corinthians 13 together, though it will probably be different than you are used to.

My hope is to work myself out of a job, so this study is not going to be full of my own thoughts or commentary on 1 Corinthians 13; it is going to teach you how to study the Bible on your own, as we study 1 Corinthians 13.

I am going to point you to the goal, equip and encourage you toward it—but you will be the one doing the work.

Here is what our four weeks together will look like:

Week 1 - Context of 1 Corinthians 13
Week 2 - Study 1 Corinthians 13:1-3
Week 3 - Study 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Week 4 - Study 1 Corinthians 13:8-13

We will study 1 Corinthians, verse-by-verse, using a different lens each day.

Day 1 – Portrait Lens – Seeing the big-picture through cross-referencing.
Day 2 – Immersion Lens – Discovering the original language.
Day 3 – Zoom Lens – Finding truths, promises, and commands.
Day 4 – Wide-angle Lens – Looking at the sentence structure.
Day 5 – Personal Lens – Looking for God’s plan for us in these verses.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great way to get started in detailed Bible study October 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm halfway through this study now. I read "Savoring Living Water" also by the author and was inspired to restart a daily Bible study routine. I have 3 kids under the age of 4 and my focused time with God has taken a back seat lately. I love how it "forces" me to really get into a particular piece of scripture and dwell on it. I've read I Corinthians 13 so many times yet this time I'm really receiving what Paul is saying in this scripture. It has blessed me and in turn blessed my family. I love how the author doesn't dictate what we should get out of it but makes us search for ourselves. Teaching us to fish if you will :) She shows us a method for Bible study that can be applied beyond I Corinthians and used throughout our quiet times with God. And it really is 15 minutes or less!

One - hopefully constructive! - piece of criticism and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5...I think it could be condensed by a week. Maybe concentrating just 3 days on the sections of 3 verses. I sometimes feel like I did the same exercise yesterday. Week 1 is amazing. Week 2 also good but by week 3, I'm feeling a little bored at the end of the week. I feel bad saying that and I recognize that the author's purpose is to teach us how to take this method and apply it to other scripture passages. From that standpoint, I get it but as a standalone study, it could use some consolidation. What I will do is condense the methodology as I move on to other scriptures on my own.

For the cost and the value as a teaching tool, I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rich study for digging into the Word on your own March 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
1 Corinthians 13 is one of my favorite chapters of the bible. On discouraging days, I will sometimes just sit down and read it out loud. So I was pretty excited to see this bible study.

Having read Savoring Living Water: How to Have an Effective Quiet Time by author Katie Orr (with Lara Williams) and working through several of her online bible studies, I knew I would be getting a treat. One of the things I really appreciate about Katie's studies is her understanding that a busy mom desperately NEEDS time in the Word, but usually doesn't have much time to spare. Fifteen minutes is doable, even if grabbed in snatches spread across the day.

I love that she grasps that while devotionals are nice and all, true growth comes through our own individual grappling with God's Word, coming to understanding on a personal level, and applying it in a real way to how we makes choices. This study gets you really thinking, not just swallowing someone else's interpretation.

The lens theme appeals to me as an amateur photographer. Taking one passage a week, you revisit it daily, focusing on a different aspect each day. I especially enjoy digging into word meaning and structure... it can really illuminate a passage. Few studies give as much attention to original word meaning and sentence structure as this one does.

You are encouraged to avoid commentaries as you work through the week, which is important to coming to a personal understanding. But I do think it would be useful on the weekend to spend some time learning how others have interpreted the passage (through discussions or by reading commentaries).

5.0 out of 5 stars Teaches you how to study on your own March 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Do you want to study the Bible deeper but don't know how? Or do you know how, but just have trouble staying on track?
This guide will help both new and mature Christians alike.

In 15 minutes a day, you can learn to search through the scriptures--any scriptures!--thoroughly and meditatively. The guide takes you through a specific passage, but the principles can be applied to any passage.

Reasons I like this study:
* It doesn't tell you what to think--it's a guide, not an answer key
* It links you to ample resources to dig through on your own
* It gives you a 5-day plan to meditate on the text
* It repeats the same few verses all week so you can drink deeply
* It's short
* It's cheap (just being honest!)
* It's from Katie (originator of Do Not Depart), who is passionate about rightly dividing the Word

But my favorite reason?
It's the goal:
"Remember, the goal of studying the Bible is not to get the right answer, but to connect with Him."

Focused15 Intentional Bible Studies in 15 minutes a day. 1 Corinthians 13 by Katie Orr.

I recently joined the website Focused15. You can visit this site and join us by clicking on any "Focused15" word within this post. The Focused15 website is for people who think they don't have time to study God's Word. We are such a busy people. We are always on the go. If you are like me you want to study God's Word, you know you should, but how? I have three kids, a part-time job, a husband and a household to run, plus my elderly father to take care. My kids have responsibilities for school, church and any extra activity they are participating in. I have responsibilities for my husband, my children, my dad, my church, my home and the list goes on. How am I to find the time to meet my expectations of studying God's word properly? Let me tell, you I haven't been able to meet my expectations in 13 years. So when I found out about the Focused15 website I rushed over and carefully scanned it for information.

The most amazing thing caught my eye. "the "ordinary" Christian can learn to study the Bible on his own." When I read this statement I was overjoyed. I've longed to study the Bible on my own. Living in such a rural area there are not many Bible Study groups available and then most of them are during my working hours or do not provide child care. I continued to devour the website for information. Could this be right?

Here is what the website states: "

In Focused15, I'll show you how to look at scripture through a different lens each day. We'll use tools already at our fingertips, with methods proven through history, with a structure that is easy to follow...

...all in fifteen minutes day.
