A Must Read,
By Robert Highlander (Port Jefferson, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Focused for Bowling (Paperback)
I've attended bowling camp, had lessons, watched videos, regularly read Bowling This Month, have read a dozen books on bowling and this by far is the best. If you're looking for advice on the physical fundamentals of the game this is NOT the book for you, read John Jowdy's Bowling Execution. However, if you have shown signs of having a relatively sound physical game then Focused for Bowling is for you. It emphasizes developing your mental game, which any seasoned bowler will tell you is the key to consistency and success.
Why do some excel in the spotlight and others crack under pressure? Your mental game is the answer. There are many exercises and suggestions in this book that will help you develop a stronger mental game. There is even a section on dealing with slumps. Two years ago I was developing into a pretty good bowler. I loved the moment of needing a turkey in the tenth to win; and I often delivered. Then I went into a terrible slump. I tried everything, over thought the game, became negative about my ability, and lost my confidence as the anchor of my team. This year I started regaining my old form, but was still inconsistent and found myself thinking too much. The final straw: I missed a seven pin in the tenth that cost us a game. I picked up this book and have been lights-out since. I bowled a 299 and have average a consistent 205 for the past 8 weeks. Once you understand the physical aspects of the game, you must read Focused for Bowling!!!

focused for Bowling,

These are advanced concepts about the game that Hinitz has broken down into the simplest form. Physical talent will only get you so far in any sport, then comes the mental game. Hinitz's approach will help you identify who you are in the game, where you are in the game, and where you want to go...then help you get there! Along with Brian Voss's foreward are helpful comments and views throughout the book of several other top pros. Read, enjoy, bowl better.

This book is great for the bowler who has pretty much got the physical bases of bowling down. probably around 190 average on more than one bowling center. It's a great book for the mental aspect of moving into elite bowling.

Getting focused for bowling,

This book is great if you have the technique down but are having problems with the mental parts of bowling. However, it's a good book all around but specializes in the mental part of bowling.

Book is good in reframing your thinking and putting things in persepctive. Book is short and less than 200 pages, but still worthwhile.

My bowling game had hit rock bottom and I could tell it was mostly mental. I had lost all confidence. I was desperate so I decided to give this book a shot. Well since I have read this book I have had two good nights and two bad nights, so the results are a wash. However, after my bad nights instead of being frustrated and angry at myself I am now focusing on what I did right and visualizing being more consistent. Will it work in the long run? I don't know but it is nice going home and not wanting to "kick the cat" so to speak.
I have not fully tried all the exercises this book instructs but I believe if I really practiced what this book preaches my game would improve significantly. If you're in a slump give this book a try, it will not hurt.

A must have!,
This review is from: Focused for Bowling (Paperback)
This book deals with the mental game of bowling. It evaluates how you are right now and gives you tips on how to prepare for each shot. The book has charts that you can copy and evaluate your where you think you're currently at. After you use the tips it suggests, you can reevaluate yourself in the future to see where you have improved. This book is a must have for the bower that wants to improve their game. I have applied the tips to my game and still continue to improve my overall scores and averages. I find that reading this book will give me a tremendous edge on my opponents when I bowl tournaments.
Go on and give it a try! PBA Member since 2007

Not Bad IF!,

If you bowl less than a 240 average, this book isn't really for you. If you need advice on equipment or technique, this book isn't for you. But if you are really good, and are having problems with the mental parts of bowling, this book is perfect. It's not so much a bowling book as a mental guide to sports performance. It's a good book for that reason.
