Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 Audio Interface

The new Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 18 in/8 out interface extends the Scarlett range of USB 2.0 interfaces from Focusrite, each of which offers a series of high-quality inputs and outputs for different recording requirements. With four Focusrite mic pres, Scarlett 18i8 is designed for producers and recording artists or bands that require the ability to record a significant number of sources at the same time, including multiple mics/instruments, with the expansion capability to handle multiple studio recording requirements. Scarlett 18i8 works on Mac, PC and iPad (Apple Camera Connection Kit required for iPad).

Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 Audio Interface
18 Separate Inputs, 8 Independent Outputs

At the heart of 18i8 is a set of four Focusrite mic preamps with up to 60dB gain, designed specifically for Focusrite's computer audio interfaces. The first two inputs offer Mic/Line/Instrument on universal XLR/TRS connectors, while inputs 3 and 4 offer Mic/Line capability on universal XLRs-all four are on the front panel with pads and 48V phantom power. Four more line inputs are provided on TRS connectors. An ADAT optical digital connector provides eight additional digital inputs that can also be used with external mic preamps like Focusrite's OctoPre Mk II (sold separately) to increase the number of mic inputs the 18i8 can handle to 12. A stereo S/PDIF coaxial input is also included. On the output side, there are two TRS monitor outputs, stereo S/PDIF coax, and two independent stereo headphone outputs, each with their own volume knob so both the artist and the engineer can control their own personal monitoring. All analog inputs and outputs have their own connectors, so there is no need for breakout cables, and all feature Focusrite precision 24-bit, 96kHz sampling A/D and D/A conversion to get the most accurate signal possible into and out of recording applications on Windows, Mac and now iOS apps.

Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 Audio Interface
Tough and Innovative Hardware

Scarlett 18i8 is housed in a compact red unibody metal case to withstand the rigors of the road-and the studio. Input level controls feature signal halos-LED rings around the level control that give a simple and immediate go/no-go level indication: green means there is a recordable signal while red indicates overload. A large main monitor knob with mute button means that main monitor levels are always at your fingertips.

Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 Audio Interface
Included Software

Included in the package is the Scarlett MixControl low-latency DSP-based software mixer and router, with intuitive one-click presets and a latency of under 1.4 ms. You'll also find the Scarlett plug-in suite for VST, AU and RTAS, offering EQ, gate, compression and reverb, plus an authorization code for Ableton Live Lite, the Novation Bass Station soft synth and a Loopmasters sample pack.

I own several audio interfaces, and this is probably the best I've bought in this price range. The most useful (and hardly advertised) feature is that it can operate in standalone and class compliant (CC) mode. There is no need to connect it to a computer, and it works natively with a iPad. I can carry it and use it on stage for monitoring, and turn it into a portable recording studio with a iPad. Do not neglect offline use when buying an interface, I've come to appreciate this feature after owning several devices which only work when connected to a computer and wished that Focusrite had released interfaces like these earlier.

The power adapter supports 110 - 240 V and the connectors can be swapped for different types of sockets.

For a really in-depth review (hardware / software / performance), refer to this review for Scarlett 18i6 (18i8 has 4 preamps, 2 headphone outs, standalone mode and better iPad compatiblity):

Received my Focusrite 18i8. Surprised on the surface with how solid the enclosure was, but there are some hidden issues.

On the rear of the unit, there are four 1/4 female jacks for channels 5-6-7-8 as well as Monitor outs.
Each of these rear jacks use a plastic nut to hold each in place. To my surprise, after I connected my monitor speakers, my left port suddenly produced no output. Checked mixer settings of course, then later double checked the connections, and the input jack actually released the cable plug. There was almost no tension holding these plugs in. I tested them all and found at least three of them didn't securely hold the plug in at the very end when fully inserted and there was not that tension click. I ran yet another test. Left the cable in the same port again, and 30 minutes later, the same issue happened with the monitor cable.

Considering the female port may have just needed some downward tension, I removed the back cover and surprised to see that each of these ports were solid plastic construction and there was no way to adjust the tension of the jack. For something as solidly constructed as the cabinet, the parts used in the chinese construction are way below par....I am very dissapointed. Prior to this I used a smaller Presonus Audiobox and the jacks did not have this issue......

Bright spot was the pre-amps on the front are good and very quiet and very little white noise

I am curious if anyone else had this issue........Returning this one and may consider the Presonus as an alternative.

Update 12/29 : I hung onto the unit after all and made a few new observations. It appeared my shielded XLR to 1/4 Monitor cable may be one of the causes of the
port not grabbing the cable as tight.

Says it all in my title. I hesitated paying a little cheaper for the previous model that contained less inputs. Im glad i invest a bit more because i underestimated how many instruments i would be recording not necissarily at the same time, but in one recording session (which prevents me of unplugging, and replugging constantly, especially for one particular instrument/sound).

Bigger than i thought it would be but definitely a plus. Shows that it is well built, ready to use and means serious business.

I was also amazed by the simplicity of the design. Straight to the point without cutting corners. Preamp is really good.

All and all, I'd highly recommend this product to anyone looking for an audio interface.

It's a great audio interface, the mic preamps are above my expectations.

The scarlett mix (software included) it's ok, it's not really needed to start recording

I love this company (Focusrite) and this interface. I previously owned a Digidesign 003 interface. I sold the Digi 003, knowing that it will become obsolete and the Firewire 400 interface is becoming obsolete in the Mac world. To my ears, this interface sounds WAY better than the Digi 003. The things you read about the preamps are not lies. They sound great and are very honest. Great purchase!!

At first I thought I received a defective Scarlett 18i8 unit. It was clear when listening through the headphones but heavily distorted in any recording software. It turns out all USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports on my Gigabyte motherboard (with a 3rd gen core i5 and 16GB ram) caused the distortion but since I went to an add-on USB 3.0 card everything has been crystal clear. The Scarlett drivers must not like the chipset on the built-in USB.

The sound recorded on this AI is great! This is my first AI and I'm new to DAW software, so it took me some time to figure out how to set up the DAW software that came with the 18i8. Without too much difficulty, however, I was able to record great quality sound with this.
If you are a newbie like me, let me know and I'll be happy to share my experiences with this.
I highly recommend this.

Other reviews have already made the main good points, so let this review just add to the statistics that this is a good product.

- It's super solid build quality, from what I've found. Sturdy knobs, good ports, good case. Everything secured properly on the inside, don't have to worry about handling this like eggshells.
- This is the second Focusrite interface I've owned (used to have a Saffire). They seem to take great care in building good products. Good on Focusrite.
- Good circuitry and A/D converter. No noise listening through my high quality monitoring equipment, HS80M monitor speakers and ATHM50 headphones.
- I have to say, I love the halo knobs. Beautiful, and a clever way to save space. Good interface.
- Easy plug and play USB interface. I would recommend the Scarlett line (USB) over the Saffire line (firewire) if you're on Windows. More problems with firewire, perhaps because it's an Apple standard.
- All inputs and outputs come up as separate I/O tracks in a DAW. So for example, you could set up 4 condenser mics for 4 different vocalists, and record them all separately, allowing you to individually adjust and edit them perfectly (barring mic phasing issues).
