3.0 out of 5 stars Sligthly superficial book - not much details - very few places to visit, February 12, 2010

This review is from: Fodor's Belgium, 4th Edition (Travel Guide) (Paperback)
I am a little disappointed by this book.
I am from Belgium but I live in the US, and I wanted to get some ideas what to show in Belgium to my boyfriend.
I was quiet disappointed to see that the book list something like 4 or 5 main destinations (Brugges, Gand, Bruxelles, Anvers, and maybe one or two more) and that is it.
These are big attractions, but there are so many great hidden things everywhere that were not mentioned anywhere in the book, and there was almost nothing about the North-West part of the country, "Les Ardennes", which is a place where Belgian people like to go on vacation, with beautiful forest and very typical food and little villages.
I checked the restaurants for Brussels, and there too they list places known for a long time, some of them that became tourist traps (I wished they mentioned that in the guide book), but overall there was a reasonable selection.
I was hoping to see more recent places, where Belgian people go now, listed as well.

So this book is ok.
It will give you the main attractions in the main cities, and some restaurants that are known for age with a nice decoration.
If you never saw Belgium, and will spend there 4 or 5 days, that is ok.
If you want to spend more time, and really get into Belgian life, discover charming or fashionable places, nature, ..., buy another guide book.
The lonely planet or the "guide du routard" have probably more to offer.
