Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Whether you're shopping for an island or have already decided where to go, you'll get a serious amount of information in this brick-sized guide. Especially helpful for the undecided is a new section containing more than 30 pages of color photos--like a miniature coffee-table book--so a browser intrigued by a mountain view, a cricket match, or a carnival street scene can choose an island by sight. Each chapter opens with a small story or anecdote, which can be equally compelling. Once you zero in on an island, there are frank, fact-filled sections on hotels, restaurants, sites, an "A to Z" of practicalities (what to wear to dinner in St. Barts), and fun facts--like the antique trading beads that wash up on beaches in St. Eustatius. Did we mention the maps? Each island has one, with hotels clearly marked (very useful for plotting distances between airport, town, or the best beach). In the back there's a full-color, pull-out Rand McNally map of a lifetime's worth of island idylls. --Cynthia Penney

4.0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed, June 5, 2000
This review is from: Fodor's Caribbean 2000 (Paperback)
As far as travel books go, you can almost say this one has too much info! I've been to the Caribbean once and was looking for a different island to go to on my next trip. It helped me weigh the pros and cons and narrow down my selection. The A-Z sections were very helpful. Though I was disappointed to see they did not list the hotel I stayed at in Aruba -- so I know this is not as exhaustive as it could've been! The two page island finder at the end was also a great way to compare. I'm giving it to my travel companion so we can select our trip!

1.0 out of 5 stars lots of outdated descriptions, August 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Fodor's Caribbean 2000 (Paperback)
This, and many other books on the caribbean suffer from irregular updates. It's OK if the hotel or restaurant is long established, and will therefore be included, although this isn't always a guarantee,as recently closed establishments tend to still be listed long after their demise. Many guides(including this one) just send a questionnaire to establishments asking them to up date information, and to include a brief description, thus many listings are far from impartial. The most consistently accurate guide for this area, updated yearly by the author himself is Doyles Guide to the Windwards and Leewards. This is mainly aimed at sailors but gives accurate (and updated)descriptions of shore based establishments.
