Book Description

September 28, 1999 Fodor's Caribbean Ports of Call
This book is by far the least expensive of all the competition. It's a handy, inexpensive impulse buy that's easy to carry around.

With over 2 million passengers each year, the Caribbean is the world's most -popular cruise destination.

Coverage of each of the 28 major ports of call in the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Panama Canal Zone has been thoroughly updated. Plus, this guide makes it easy to stay ahead of the changes in the cruise industry, with up-to-the-minute facts on every major ship sailing the waters of the Caribbean.

You'll find bed-and-breakfasts in big houses with turrets and little houses with decks, in mansions by the water and cabins in the forest, not to mention structures of many sizes and shapes in between. B&Bs are run by people who were once lawyers and writers, homemakers and artists, nurses and architects, singers and businesspeople. Some B&Bs are just a room or two in a hospitable local's home; others are more like small inns. So there's an element of serendipity to every stay in an inn or B&B. But while that's part of the pleasure of visiting these establishments, it's also an excellent reason to plan your travels with a good B&B guide. The one you hold in your hands serves the purpose neatly. We think it's the best of its kind.

All the establishments we've included promise a unique experience, a distinctive sense of time and place; each is a destination in itself, not just a place to rest your head at night but an integral part of a weekend escape. For that reason, we tell you not only about places to stay but they also about what's up in the area and what you should and shouldn't miss -- everything from historic sites and parks to antiques shops, boutiques, and the area's niftiest restaurants and nightspots.

A Point of Pride

It's a sad commentary on other B&B guides today that we feel obliged to tell you that our writers did, in fact, visit every property in person, and that it is they, not the innkeepers, who wrote the reviews. No one paid a fee or promised to sell or promote the book in order to be included in it. (In fact, one of the most challenging parts of the work of a Fodor's writer is to persuade innkeepers and B&B owners that he or she wants nothing more than a tour of the premises and the answers to a few questions!) Fodor's has no stake in anything but the truth. So trust us, the way you'd trust a knowledgeable, well-traveled friend.

This review is from: Fodor's Caribbean Ports of Call, 5th Edition: Where to Dine & Shop and What to See and Do When You Go Ashore (Paperback)
