Fodor's The Complete Guide to the National Parks of the West has plenty of detail without being overwhelming. We particularly liked the guide's suggestions of what to see and do based on the amount of time a person had for that park: half day, full day, two days, etc. That not only simplified the prioritizing for us but also their suggestions worked very well for us. In addition we liked how the guide included what is also nearby for seeing/experiencing while in the area.

The information is well organized and easy to sort through. It is worth the money. If purchased well in advance, you can do a lot of your planning with its guidance.

I used this book on a recent family trip in July 2013. My family went to seven national parks on the west side of the United States and the book was very helpful. It would help more if they listed a few more places to stay. (we used our AAA book to help find some of our accommodations). Stop by "Hell's Backbone Grill and Boulder Mountain Lodge for the most incredible food in the USA and comfortable, luxurious, restful, and peaceful accommodations at the lodge) in Boulder, Utah.

My personal "bucket list" includes visiting every National Park in the West----this guide has it all! That is, all the information needed to plan a trip as well as use during the trip. Maps, recommendations for both short and long stays, all recreation opportunities, lodge/camping info in detail, where to eat both inside and outside each park, when to visit, flora/fauna, how to avoid crowds, emergancy services and phone numbers, etc. Truly a complete guide indeed in one little handy carrying case. This was one of my best purchases for value/usefulness.

We try every year to visit one or two national parks. We have an old addition of this book and thought it was time to update. It is wonderful. Very complete and up-to-date. Full of great tips. The best part are the suggestions for things to do depending on the length of your visit. Can't wait to put it to use this year.

When I retired in Arizona 10 years ago I took up hiking and since then I have been to most of the parks in this book to hike and explore. I wish we'd had this book to plan our trips.

This guide is chocked full of concise info, including the "must do" as well as general explanation of what to expect at each park and nearby. Color pictures give you a flavor of the area and inspire further exploration, while maps are clear and quite comprehensive. Recommendations for food and places to stay are also helpful. Even limited trail information for each area is included and gives difficulty levels as well as brief descriptions. Bonuses include driving routes to visit several parks on a trip, along with a little geology, astronomy, history and science. The book covers 34 parks (including three in Canada) each with its own chapter. Although everything can't be covered, at 920 pages you've got a great review of national parks in the western half of North America.

I checked this book out of the library, but I'm purchasing my own copy to help me plan trips to the few parks we haven't visited and as a reminder of the ones we have. You may want to gather additional information once you focus on a park, but this guide will get you started with enthusiasm and a good understanding of the diversity of western national parks and help you choose which ones to visit--or at least the order to try to visit them all! I highly recommend this book. Happy trails to you!

It says complete but it really isn't. It is a nice intro to each park. You should follow up with either another book specifically about the park, or go online. I have found that Trip Advisor and the NPS websites pretty much give you everything you need to know for free.

If you are looking to explore the parks on foot, this is not the book for you. This book provides a good guide if you want to do most of your exploring from the inside of your vehicle. For example in the Grand Tetons the longest hike in this book was 7 miles and rated as strenuous. By the time I had visited a couple of parks I learned not to trust the hike recommendations of this book, as they often don't list the best ones (as recommended by the park rangers).

I initially purchased this book to help with my summer trip to Utah with my Girl Scout troop, but having looked through it, I'm so excited to use it for all kinds of travel on the West coast in the upcoming years! I love being outside and love visiting National Parks and this guide is a fabulous help I love for each Park it has maps, suggestions for tours (walking and driving), programs that are offered, and things not to miss, plus things to do, places to stay, and restaurants to eat in places nearby the park! It's a complete guide I've already marked with post its and started highlighting!
