I lived in England for several years and traveled widely all around the country. To pick up this book is to take me back to so many of those journeys. There is a laminated, removable map of London that also shows the tube (subway) system of London. Many helpful hints in getting around the city and dealing with taxi, the boats on the river, etc. are given.

There are many snippets of interesting information, such as Gloucester Cathedral was used in the filming of Harry Potter. Sites have addresses, information, web sites, hours, and telephone numbers. There are some surprising omissions, like very obvious, nice central hotels in some cities are not listed. One wonders why they were left out. There are helpful inserts such as; English gardens, English desserts and a 6 page timeline of English history. Where to stay, eat and shop are included with all of the relevant information.

The book is divided into Experience England, London, the southeast, the south, the west country, the Thames Valley, Bath and the Cotswolds, Stratford-Upon-Avon and the heart of England, Lancashire and the peaks, the Lake district, East Anglia, Yorkshire, the northeast, Wales. There are good maps.

There is much help in here. Some of the "secrets" of experiencing the country in a special way are given, like getting tickets to the Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower of London. There is good advice on what foods to eat and where they are found. There are convenient charts on clothes and shoe sizes.
There are some glaring omissions, Coventry, for one, is completely left out of the book, except on maps. But, in total, this book is good enough to make me homesick for the place that I consider my 2nd home.

I am planning a trip to the UK this summer and I bought 3 or 4 different travel guides for research. Some of the other books have more pictures and a little more history/background on each place....but I found this book to have the most relative information for planning a visit (hours, how to get there, what to expect, how much, what to see, what to skip). I keep coming back to this book over others.

Went to bookstore to purchase the Fodor's England book - It wasn't in stock, so looked at all others available - the others just don't compare - Fodor's is just more understandable, and laid out in a way that suits me better. They've been printing these a lonf time too. I have one from 1977, but wanted updated information. Almost bought the London only Fodor's but will want to see more of the UK when visiting.

I also looked at other travel books, including Rick Steves, but I liked this one the best because of its clarity and pictures.

Just came back from two weeks in England. Fodor's was a godsend. Many excellent restaurant recommendations and we found several of our lodgings through it as well. Ignore everything it says about driving there. You cannot drive in England today (unless you're a native) without a GPS.

It is a good guide but very difficult to use online as it has no index or one that connects directly to the page.

Need it for our first real opportunity to tour various parts of Wales. Helpful for historic and scenic attractions. Would have liked a bigger and better map for motoring.
