On a recent trip I took along a few guidebooks of the major cities of Germany, but this was the only one for the entire country. I found that Fodor's is so improved that it now includes some lesser known sites and more precise directions than the Fodor's I used to know. It was easy to tear out the chapters of a particular region and carry them with me for the week in a city. It provided very clear and concise background information and was truly essential for some of the out of the way places I took as day trips outside cities like Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig, and Munich. I had been to Germany a number of times and this guidebook impressed me for its depth and accuracy as well as a source of some new things to do that I had not known about from previous trips. It may not be the only guide you'll want (some of Rick Steves' books are great too), but for a comprehensive guide to a country, this is the best.

This is a good, solid comprehensive guide that gives the former East its proper due. Actually, the chapter on Berlin is very good, up to date and complete. Since Germany is such an awesome country, with more for a curious traveler than one volume could possibly capture, some of the guide to the provinces and smaller towns is quite summary. That makes the book very much an "on the beaten path" type of guide.

Listings of hotels and restaurants are good for the major tourist centers, but are very thin for more hidden treasures such as Bamberg, Goslar, and Regensburg, for example. Actually, there are also very few maps included, and the book really feels more like a chunky guide to sites, listings, and itineraries.

This is a good comprehensive guide to the major tourist sites. If you're looking for more encyclopedic coverage, Lonely Planet is a better choice. Ironically enough, Lonely Planet is better known for its coverage of outdoor activities, but it is actually THIS guide that is the better of the two for eco-tourism.

Best guide available as far as I know. Visited may places in Germany over the years; this book really gave good insight on almost every small town. More than just help on finding a room. Great if you like to meet the people instead of just the ordinary tourist traps.

Although Fodor's continues to "star" mainly the higher end hotels and restaurants, I feel it is a wonderful base to go to for dependable reviews. Perhaps more "insider" info from locals and natives could expand the offerings as Germany is noted for clean hotels and fine food across the board.

My former husband is German and we have spent a lot of time there. We ordered this when we were traveling there and thought it might be helpful to use for our visit in order to discover new areas, cool things, and to help us travel to areas where we don't usually go. Maybe I am just more of a Let's Go! travel guide sort of person, but this seemed written for people who want a traditional and more expensive vacation and it is certainly not for someone who has traveled in Germany before. It does include all of the major things to see and hotels and places to eat in the major cities, but we didn't think that there was much exciting or novel in this book. I rated at three stars because maybe that is what a lot of people want - the basics, the places everyone else goes... But we were hoping to find a guide that would include those cool places that aren't obvious, the cafes on the backstreets with the most amazing coffee, etc. We were also really disappointed that some of the best places we know around my husband's hometown were not included and they are not even really "off the beaten path" places because there are always tourists there when we go. So, I don't think this is a bad book for the traditional traveler, but I think young travelers, anyone watching your money, and anyone who has been in Germany before will not find it to be very helpful.

Not bad, except for the totally inadequate information on dealing with the train system. Seriously, a three or four page section with a guide to how to navigate the different levels of train service and tell if you're on the right one would be pretty useful. Not everyone does driving vacations in Europe.

Great travel guide for Germany. Along with a local guide this is a great planning tool. Bulky to carry but if you review the guide based on your plans you can leave it behind for day trips.
Good city guides
Good write ups about history and culture
