When I was stationed in Germany I traveled as often as I could south to Italy. They were always pleasant journeys and I usually had the help of my trusty Fodor guide. I went through many different publishers and Fodor's usually had the most help for the independent traveler. It suggested hotels that were different and that I could find in my budget and many that I remember with great fondness. Places to eat, tips on what to see, and how to get around are included. The 2013 guide has continued down that path.

This guide has conversion charts for clothing sizes, distance and temperature among others. The book contains information on: experiencing Italy, Rome and environs, side trips from Rome, northern Italy, Central, Southern, there is vocabulary and features such as- Ancient Rome, the Duomo, and Ancient Pompeii. There is very good help in what to pack, the clothes you should have. There are itineraries that would work very well and a pull out map that is also very good. Some of the maps within the pages can be a bit confusing; others are all you might need.

Advice is clear..."unless you have nerves of steel, it's best not to drive to Tivoli". Many of the facts might surprise you and are not included in other guidebooks, like the fact many bathrooms have the shower drain in the middle of the room, wash cloths are not provided much of the time. There are warnings- "don't be waylaid by illegal touts, often wearing fake uniforms who try to flag you down and offer to arrange parking and hotels." A lot of guidebooks skirt around safety issues, Fodor seems to take a stand on what you need to know. There is excellent information on public transportation too - how to use it and what works best and approximate costs.

The travel advice and photos for sights to see is very good and will give you a wide choice. Shopping advice is also excellent. This is a book that will enable you to have piacevoli viaggi...pleasant journeys.

I will not use this book for my trip. It is more reading material before a trip rather than a travel guide while in Italy.

Although this book was valuable, it wasn't great. I honestly found TripAdvisor to be significantly more valuable.

Italy has so many amazing cities and things going for it that this book simply can't provide enough detail on all of them. I used this book to help pick areas that we were going to vacation to, but the details for those areas (especially the smaller Tuscan towns) simply wasn't valuable enough.

It probably would have been smart to buy additional books that focused on the cities/areas that we were going to, but it just didn't seem worth it.

this guide gives all kinds of cool tips for saving time and money in italy. For example, it shows how to avoid standing in large lines where you might want to visit by phoning ahead or checking online. It tells you how to get free wifi by buying a travel pass in Venice. It has very practical advice and gives fair reviews of hotels and restaurants.

Great travel book for Italy. I'll use this for years to come on my next trip. The pictures and blurbs got me so excited for my journey.

I found the guide hard to use. The information is not in a index, so I found myself always searching.

with enough details. More maps would be helpful but I'm sure that one Book can't contain all of the maps that various travelers might need.

The Fodor's Italy 2013 is a very good guide... there could be a few more detailed maps as well as more in-depth walking tours, especially of Rome.
