This excerpt, from the Pleasures and Pastimes section, gives you a taste of what Maui & Lanai has to offer and the sights and scenes that make it a great place to visit.

Beaches

Enjoy the west coast's family-friendly playgrounds, watch daredevil surfers on the north shore, or contemplate the natural beauty of the sands around Hana. The choice is yours, but you can't go home and tell your friends you went to Maui and never visited a beach. For swimming, sunning, and people-watching, as well as convenient parking and amenities, the resort beaches of Wailea and Ka'anapali can't be beat.

Hawaiian Culture and History

It would be a shame to leave Maui without learning at least a little about the island's history. Take time to visit the Hana Cultural Center if you drive to the eastern shore town. Tour the Sugar Museum and the Bailey House near Wailuku. Chat with the well-informed guides at the Baldwin Home in Lahaina. You may even want to take one of the programs more and more hotels are offering that focus on Hawaiian culture, including lessons in lei-making, hula, Hawaiian language or music. They're fun, and they'll enrich your enjoyment of what you see and hear as you travel around Maui.

Hiking

Hiking on Maui can be an easy stroll through a botanical garden, a walk along paved and guard-railed paths in 'Iao Valley State Park, or a pack trip into Haleakala Crater. There's something to suit nearly every age and inclination, from the rugged outdoors-lover to the urbanite who hails cabs for exercise.

Water Sports

Surfing, snorkeling, scuba-diving, sailing, and fishing can be enjoyed year-round on Maui, and lessons are available for almost any water sport you'd like to try. Experienced divers will want to take one of the many snorkel or scuba cruises to the most exotic and challenging offshore dive sites, but Maui's shores offer plenty of colorful and unusual sea-life specimens to delight the underwater eye. If you've never surfed but have always wanted to try, the gentle waters of Lahaina Harbor are a great place to learn, and, yes, you can learn in a single half-day lesson.

1.0 out of 5 stars Frommer's was much better!, September 21, 1999
This review is from: Fodor's Maui and Lanai 99: The Complete Guide with Spectacular Drives, Beaches, and Adventures Off the Beat en Path (Paperback)
We took our family and went to Maui. Armed with 3 guide books, I was able to compare the content and accuracy of them while on the island.

I found Frommer's book to be a little outdated. More to the point, I found it to be lacking a lot of information that the other two books had. I do not recommend that anyone purchase this book. Maybe their tour books for other islands are better...
