Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Fodor's remains the first choice for travel collections, despite strong competition from the "Eyewitness," "Insight," and "Lonely Planet" series, to name just a few. These two new regional guides to Italy (which join the extensive Fodor's "Italy" series) clearly demonstrate the features that have kept Fodor's around for many years: comprehensiveness, attention to detail, scope, and price. Both guides begin with nearly identical introductions, with information on the general details of travel in Italy: hostels, travel to and within Italy, electricity, gay and lesbian travel, camping, and climate. All the well-known tourist destinations are thoroughly described, and each guide also features lesser-known sights in "Off the Beaten Path" segments that are scattered throughout the book. Hotels and restaurants are listed in order of price and range from luxurious to simple. Descriptions of both are more extensive than those often found in other travel series. Although the guides focus on the cities of Naples and Venice, they do a fine job of covering the regions surrounding them. Pompeii, Capri, and Sorrento are featured in Naples, while Venice includes Padua, Verona, Treviso, and the Dolomites. Any travel collection will be improved by these two titles. If you can add DK's "Eyewitness" guides on the same regions (Naples with Pompeii & The Amalfi Coast, 1998 and Venice and the Veneto, 1995) with their great illustrations, so much the better for your patrons.DLinda M. 5.0 out of 5 stars Full of useful info, January 12, 2001

This review is from: Fodor's Naples and the Amalfi Coast, 1st edition: Expert Advice and Smart Choice: Where to Stay, Eat, and Explore On and Off the B eaten Path (Fodor's Gold Guides) (Paperback)
This Fodor's guide is jam packed full of information. The decriptions are detailed and accurate. However, the reader can easily be overwhelmed with the amount of info.

The positive aspects include reastaurant / hotel guide and cost, brief historical description and then description of places of interest. My only gripe is that I wished this guide book contains pictures.

If you want a quick starter / brief overview of Naples and the Amalfi Coast, best bet is to get hold of the Eyewitness series which has good pictures, cross sections of buildings, etc.

After that, head over to Fodor's and plan your journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heading to Naples, April 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Fodor's Naples and the Amalfi Coast, 1st edition: Expert Advice and Smart Choice: Where to Stay, Eat, and Explore On and Off the B eaten Path (Fodor's Gold Guides) (Paperback)
We're moving to just north of Naples in a few weeks and Fodor's comes through again with a travel book that seemingly takes you to the place before you even get there. The combination of Naples and the Amalfi coast is a good mix for this book -- especially since we're going to be living in the area. Since it covers only the specific area we're most interested in, it allows us to get a more detailed look at what is there -- something I didn't seem to get in travel books with a focus on the entire country.
