I used this guide to select a hotel and several restaurants on a recent trip to Paris. All of them were as described in the guide, and several of them I will return to on future trips.
For restaurants, this guide is particularly good for adventurous eaters. The map that comes with the guide includes some of the establishments and sights reviewed in the guide, presumably there are too many places reviewed to mark them all on the map. More problematically, there are a number of places where metro stops are either mis-labeled or missing entirely. Overall this is a great guide, the recommendations (both in terms of number and quality) are the best of any Paris guide I've seen. Just don't count on the map to get you where you want to go.

This was my first time in Paris, and I hated this book. It is not easy to use for first time visitors. You need to know what you are looking for. I have to admit towards the end of the trip I found it more useful. I had the National Geographic Guide which was more fun and easy to use.

After having been to Paris once, I had an idea what I wanted/needed in a guidebook for my second trip. This is it. Thanks. The website info is up to date, the maps are well-organized, and the suggestions for saving on expenses are inspired, i.e., for 1 euro, you can enjoy the sculptures in the gardens at the Musee Rodin.

An almost complete book on Paris with lots of good information and phone numbers. Would definitely buy another Fodor's book.

Fordor's guides are well written and sensible. This is no exception. Having it on the Kindle was a big plus.

Best guide for Paris, hands down. My wife and I used this to plan a 2-week Paris trip. The book is broken down by sections: Attractions (which is the sub-divided by neighborhood), Shopping, Dining, Lodging, Side Trips. To plan most of your trip, this book is all you need. The attractions section (which is almost half the book) especially is incredibly detailed. The "side trips from Paris" section is a bit unbalanced. There is an extensive spread on Versailles, only small blurbs on Chartres and Disneyland Paris, and nothing else. However, if you are traveling to Paris, you are most likely going to see Paris and are not looking for many side trips.
The only section I found truly lacking was the lodging. There are relatively few choices listed. That being said, I had already secured lodging before I even bought the book, that being the most critical piece of any trip. I used TripAdvisor to find a hotel, then this book for everything else.

This book guided us through our entire trip to Paris. We previously used Fodor's Rome, and both times, the advice proved invaluable. The maps are not great, but that would be my only criticism. We found we were better off getting a street map once we arrived in Paris. But the sight seeing recommendations are fabulous and detailed. I couldn't have made it around Paris without this book.

Full-Color never looked so good,
This review is from: Fodor's Paris 2011 (Full-color Travel Guide) (Paperback)
Can I just say that I absolutely LOVE this travel guide? Fodor's overall is my favorite when it comes to travel guides. The writers are always honest and keep things interesting in their descriptions and recommendations of what to do or see.
This guide categorized sights by neighborhood as usual and also pointed out a few extras within each neighborhood's chapter, as far as shopping and dining was concerned. Pointed out some extra non-major sites off the beaten path which I am very excited to check out once my trip comes up. 26 days away! |
