Culture, Charm, and Contradiction

Amsterdam is a city with a split personality: It's a gracious, formal cultural center built on
canals, and it's the most offbeat metropolis in the world. There is an incomparable romance about
the canals at night, and a depth of cultural heritage in its great art museums; but there is also a
houseboat crawling with stray cats permanently parked in front of an elegant gabled canal house, and
prostitutes display their wares in the windows facing the city's oldest church.

Amsterdam's museums are filled with some of the best art in the western world. There are the
home-grown Old Masters and Van Gogh in the galleries and art museums, as well as works by artists
such as Georg Breitner, who roamed Amsterdam with his friend Vincent Van Gogh and produced
atmospheric scenes of the city at night and in winter. There is also a wealth of contemporary art.

Amsterdam is best in spring when the parks and window boxes are filled with flowers and you can
get a clear view of the gables between the branches of trees not yet in full leaf. Winters can be icy,
with biting winds, but one of the compensations -- if the canal freezes over -- is ice skating.
