Destination: Seattle and Vancouver
The Metropolitan Pacific Northwest

Your plane arrived after dark, and you fought the ubiquitous traffic jam on your drive from the airport to your downtown hotel. But you had a good night's rest -- interrupted only occasionally by a police or ambulance siren---and you wake to the happy trilling of birds. As you open your window, the sweet aroma of blossoms wafts into your room. At the foot of the hill, the golden morning sun skips over the rippling wavelets of a saltwater fjord. Above the homes of the far shore, the tall trees of an evergreen forest cover the slopes. Snowcapped peaks tower in the distance. A bald eagle soars by on stiff wings. Welcome to the metropolitan cities of the Pacific Northwest.

Both Vancouver and Seattle are bordered by water and ringed by forests and mountains. Even though their urban environs are home to several million people, wild nature is never far. It's as close as the shore, as near as an urban creek where salmon spawn in season, or a wooded ravine where coyotes or deer may hide. The shore side alders and wild blackberry tangles along Seattle's Lake Union (which is about as urban as a lake can get, with boatyards, restaurants, condos, and houseboats) provide shelter for sparrows, goldfinches, wrens, and sharpshinned hawks. Beavers gnaw on shade trees, river otters frolic in the water. Great blue herons, ducks, wild swans, and raccoons hang out in Vancouver's Stanley Park. (Vancouver is the only city where you can get panhandled by a raccoon.) Cougars and black bears occasionally show up on North shore trails.

The countryside surrounding both Seattle and Vancouver is beautifully varied and invites travelers to explore. To the west, beyond the waters of the Salish Sea, the islands of Puget Sound, the San Juans, and the Gulf Islands beckon. Farther west lie the Olympic Peninsula and Vancouver Island with their mountains, surf-swept coastline, fjords, rain forests, and First Nations villages. To the east loom the Cascades with their rugged peaks, wildflower meadows, lakes, waterfalls, and ski runs. Best of all, even though much of this countryside is very rugged, it is traversed by modern highways. Nor is it unmitigated wilderness, for most regions have comfortable inns to lodge and feed visitors, and enough natural and historical attractions to keep curious minds occupied.

There's lots more to see and do in Seattle and Vancouver and the surrounding islands, coast, and countryside. But don't take anyone's word for it. Come and see for yourself. Every morning may be as special as that first one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fodor's Seattle & Vancouver 2000, April 4, 2000

This review is from: Fodor's Seattle & Vancouver 2000 (Paperback)
I received my copy of Fodor's Seattle & Vancouver 2000 less than a week ago - we now have airline tickets, reservations in Vancouver and Vancouver Island and Salt Spring Island - and hate that our trip is four months away! The book was invaluable - much is already marked and underlined. Having a separate map for lodging and dining is very helpful - plus we have found Fodor's suggestions for "walking" trips extremely helpful and accurate for trips to Europe and out West. Many of the places where we have reservations also have sites on the Internet - it would have been helpful if those addresses were listed in the book. I'm sure that will soon be happening. I had the recent copy of Gourmet's issue which focused on the best of restaurants - and the Fodor's comments were compatible - right on target! Overall, the book was excellent - but since we will spend more of our time on Vanvouver Island, I wish more detail was given about it.
