If you are spending thousands of dollars on your trip, it is worthwhile to spend a few dollars on this excellent book and plan your trip so much better. When we plan a vacation, the first thing we ask ourselves is- what are we going to do there. Then we get on the Internet and try to make sense of what people are suggesting. This book tells you all without the hassle of browsing the internet and still not being sure of what to do. They mark interesting things with something called "Fodor's choice" and they have never disappointed.

Very strongly recommended.

For those who say New York is not just about the city, this is the book to get. It manages not only to cover the major cities but find the fun stuff in the smaller out of way places. A great companion guide when traveling the Empire State.

Fodor’s New York State Guide, Second Edition

This travel guide to New York state has 528 pages in a book that is 8" high, 5" wide, and " thick. The nine chapters are marked on the edges of the pages for quick reference. It has an ‘Index’. The last page tells about the six writers who describe the area where they live. “Travel Smart New York State” has advice on travel by air, bus, car, and train. The “Essentials” discuss eating out, accommodations, and advice for families. “Safety” is explained (p.519); this can apply to any strange area. [People in lower Manhattan can spot tourists by their clothes and slower walking, at least years ago.]

Chapter 1, “Experience New York”, provides a summary (its more like New York city). This is a good description of the varies areas of the state. They list the “Top Attractions” on page 16, the “Top Experiences” on page 17. Pages 18-19 list specific sites, historical areas are on page 20-21. Chapter 2 tells about “Niagara Falls and Western New York”. Buffalo is the blizzard capital of the US. It has the Pierce-Arrow Museum (a luxury automobile of the early 20th century). You can travel to Canada and the city of Toronto, Ontario. Chapter 3 discusses “The Finger Lakes Region”. Rochester and Syracuse in the north, Corning, Elmira, and Binghamton in the south. These are most enjoyable in warm weather months.

Chapter 4 discusses “The Adirondacks and Thousand Islands”. This is famous for its forests (the land makes poor farmland). The summer months have the most tourists. Some favor hunting in the fall. There is advice for automobiles in cold-weather months (p.163).
