See you in Turkey!, November 12, 2009
This review is from: Fodor's Turkey, 7th Edition (Full-color Travel Guide) (Paperback)
Fodor's Turkey shows the true commitment of a world-class company. Everything that is critically important to a professional guide has been included and up to date. Also the latest edition has numerous illustrated features, 245 outstanding color photographs, 51 wonderfully illustrated maps, ideas for making the most of your time and top experiences plus attractions. [...]
In an up front manner, Fodor's admits it owes its success to everyday travelers who submit their comments and photos regularly to the editor. Great idea! The customers who purchase the book are the same people who contribute to its creation. They have created a win-win situation.
The contents clearly reveal a book covering every aspect of Turkey from Antioch to Zelve. Each section highlighted in the book provides a general welcome and gives you the top reasons to go along with enabling you to get oriented. A general planner is also available letting you know when to go, how much time do you need, touring opportunities, healthy cuisine (including local specialties) and getting there and around. Any seasoned traveler will be pleased to read sections on where to eat, where to stay, nightlife and the arts, shopping and side trips. All the major regions of the Turkey are covered in full, including Istanbul, the Sea of Marmara and the North Aegean, the Central and Southern Aegean Coast, the Turquoise Riviera and Central Anatolia.
All in all, this guidebook will be well received by an audience wanting more than is currently available. The discerning traveler will recognize this as the gold standard for guidebooks on Turkey. It will equip and prepare you for just about anything. Pick it up today and start traveling!

OUT OF DATE AND VERY INCOMPLETE, July 22, 2010
This review is from: Fodor's Turkey, 7th Edition (Full-color Travel Guide) (Paperback)
I went to Turkey in June 2010 with the 2009 edition - and it's out of date! The all-important Istanbul Tramway map is super-obsolete; the tram now goes much further and this is a city that's very easy to get around in if you know the tram route ....
It hardly mentions the absolutely glorious Mosque of Suleyman the Magnificent, doesn't even put it on the list of things to see.
There is absolutely NO mention of the wonderful area called Ortakoy - under the Bosporus Bridge, by the ferry stops, which is a popular hub for night life, chock-full of pubs, seafood restaurants and a place where Turks AND tourists flock to each night. The scant maps of Istanbul don't even show it, as it is a little bit outside the Historic Center of the City (but within walking distance of the Dolmabace Palace).
None of the four-star hotels that I stayed in all over Turkey were even listed in any of their hotel lists, so obviously they only put hotels into the book that PAY to be included....
The book's coverage of the Grand Bazaar was acceptable, but every guidebook covers it in depth.
I'm guessing that FODOR's just took the old version of their guidebook and reprinted for the 2009 printing.
The DK Eyewitness Guide (which, thank Goodness, I also had with me) is FAR FAR SUPERIOR - and more readable. I chucked the FODORs in the hotel garbage at the end of my trip.

Of all the guidebooks I've bought over the years, this is one we used the most., August 11, 2010
This review is from: Fodor's Turkey, 7th Edition (Full-color Travel Guide) (Paperback)
Of all the guidebooks we've ever purchased, this one may have been used the most. When we bought this guidebook, we weren't even positive where we wanted to visit in Turkey. The guidebook's pictures and information helped us to plan our route - 8 days, 4 cities - Ephesus, Pamukkale, Cappadocia, and Istanbul. We loved that this guidebook was printed in full color, and had so many wonderful pictures. The information sections on Turkish culture, Islamic Culture, and ancient Turkey were very helpful and informative. We went all throughout the country without a guide, just this guidebook. The only inaccurate information concerned hours/ and days things are closed. Best to double-check, as the guidebook was wrong on several of these. Overall, it was great reading, very enjoyable. I would advise it as a purchase if you want a guidebook for all of Turkey, not just Istanbul.
