This guide does a good job of looking at Las Vegas, its hotels, dining options, shopping destinations, and gambling dens. It goes into a lot of detail, pointing out the very best that is out there (including different price ranges which is important to a budget conscious traveler), though it really doesn't bother telling its reader what should be avoided. Still it provides within its descriptions a sense of what the vibe is at specific locations and only recommends generally well regarded venues. For example, it might say something about being frequented by a 20 something crowd or if a hotel is kid friendly. Overall, it is useful in providing good information that will help someone plan a vacation. I would think that first time visitors might view the Strip as the only gambling destination in Vegas, but this book goes into other areas which offer the same features with a different kind of sizzle.
It also provides a tutorial on gambling for the uninformed. Since I am not into gambling, this on a practical level wouldn't be useful to me, but still I found it sort of interesting.
What I liked and really appreciated about this book was the information that had nothing to do with gaming. It offered a lot of alternatives for day trips, etc.
Having read Frommer's Las Vegas 2012 and this book, I would have to say that they are very similar and from my pov, extremely useful. The end shot Is that both guides are fashioned to give its reader current and accurate information about what's out there and aid in planning a nice trip.

I bought this book and the Unofficial Guide LV for our 9 day trip. Both are very different and both very helpful for different reasons. I'm glad I had both.
One unique thing about this book is the laminated map. I used it often. The only negative is the index. Many things I knew were in the book, and needed to find again later, were not in the index.

This guide book was so helpful and informative for my summer trip to Las Vegas! I was able to plot out some great walk-throughs of casinos, plan some fun (free!) activities, and get ideas for restaurants to visit. It gave great information and facts about the various casinos on and off the Strip. 2012 is over, but I would definitely buy a new edition of the Fodor's guide if I were going to Las Vegas again in the future! I'd also buy their guidebooks for other places I visit, because this one was really helpful.
