5.0 out of 5 stars Enter the Kingdom of Mortiis
No words could do "Fodt til a Herske" justice. Suffice to say it's an epic, hallucinogenic journey to another world - a mysterious relm of twilight winter forests and dark mountains.

It's too bad some people can't understand Mortiis' appearance - he is a "method musician". His appearance is just another part of his world which he has chosen to give...

3.0 out of 5 stars Mortiis Rocks!
This album is very good but it's not something that you will hear every day. This is ambient music, very very DARK ambient music.

It's too bad some people can't understand Mortiis' appearance - he is a "method musician". His appearance is just another part of his world which he has chosen to give us a glimpse of through his music. You wouldn't expect music like this to be performed by a guy who looks like Rickey Martin, would you?

5.0 out of 5 stars Fodt Til A Herske, November 8, 2005

First off, I must say that this review is coming from a fan of all types of music. I was incredibly fortunate to find this at my local record store. Being a huge fan of Emperor, I was curious to see what Mortiis was all about, so I purchased this without question. This is a very unique album with only two songs that span over 25 minutes each. They are deep, meaningful, and well orchestrated. At first listen, this appeared to be amongst the most depressing albums I had ever heard, but as I listened to it more and more, it's possible to see that there are different emotions put into this kind of music, not just sorrow. The artwork perfectly coincides with the music, as it is very close to what I picture in my head while listening. With the right ear, this album can lead to a very rewarding and blissful experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly good..., May 26, 2001
This review is from: Født til å Herske (Audio CD)
To be honest, Mortiis' appearance is not his selling point. All the prosthetic malarky he insists on wearing renders him a walking joke, a Goth gone completely and totally to a critical level of camp. Naturally this is probably a bit of a turn off for those who like their gothic ambience/black metal a shade darker and more sinister than what is essentially the flip side to Ronald McDonald, and hardly seductive to the rest of the self respecting consumer environment. But then maybe thats intentional; Mortiis, despite notable black metal roots, has composed on this album, likewise its superior sister 'The Stargate', long anthems of astonishing melody and musical complexity. No lighting fast razor tipped guitar riffs or shrieking, inaudible lyrics to be found, simply slow drawn out and satisfying processions of thematic 'dungeon sound'. Admittedly at times it does seem to slip into a monotony reminiscent of film soundtrack, music that seems to require a visual accompniment to do it justice, and it's not the best example of the 'satanic symphony' (that award goes to, of all things, the soundtrack to Winona Ryder's uber crap 'Lost Souls'), but it is a considerable accomplishment. Shut your eyes and think of fyords.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer Brilliance, September 27, 2006
This review is from: Født til å Herske (Audio CD)
I've known of Mortiis for quite some time. The very first song I heard from him was Parasite God and I fell in love with it. Not only was his appearance intriguing, but his music was something I didn't think would come from someone who looked like that. I started growing an ear for industrial and EBM music, and his albums were perfect. I didn't hear "Fodt Til A Herske" until a while after I heard Parasite God, and when I did hear it, I was taken away. This CD is by far superior to almost everything I own. It sounds so beautiful. Very good to relax to, and it puts the most wonderful thoughts in my head. I'm just still upset I had to miss both his tours due to the fact that he did not come to Arizona. Anyone who is a fan of anything renaissance and medieval, I recommend this album!!

5.0 out of 5 stars What does physical appearance have to do with music?, December 16, 2003

I'm usually not fond of music with no lyrics, but found this to be strangly beautiful. It's dark ambience makes me think of medieval courts...I suppose that was Mortiis' intent since the liner mentions it being "music to be played for kings".

5.0 out of 5 stars Times gone by, January 16, 2000

This album is very beautiful: slow, sad, majestic. It feels like ancestoral memories deeply buried, now brought to the surface. There is a grace and dignity so sorely lacking in most music today. It evokes a feeling of ancient times, of crumbling ruins, of a past that was once glorious, but is now forever lost and gone.

As an epic/ambient keyboardist myself (under the name, The Magus) , I must inplore that Mortiis is a musical genius. Not only is his music extroardinary but also his apearance and his life-style. All who read this I shout out to you to get a copy of "The Stargate" at once.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure artistic expression that gnaws at the soul!!, August 2, 1999

Less of a musical masterpiece than it is a piece of art. This purely digital conception conveys pure dark beauty. Mortiis creates an ambient atmosphere that forces the listener to explore his/her darkside.

5.0 out of 5 stars This music will rip your black sould apart, January 1, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Født til å Herske (Audio CD)
Mortiis is one of the most talented ex-black metal men ever to exsist. He was once the bassist for the extreme black metal band emperor but has moved on to darker and more mood setting music, it is VERY atmoshpereric. If you do not enjoy music that is long repetitve songs, very dark, mood setting and sadistic, then Im affraid you will not like Mortiis the multi tanlented man who also has two side projects such as VOND and FATA MORGANA which is also very intresting, dark and mainly lyricless music that will fill your black soul which is no longer a void. I recommand this to any fan of black metal or mood setting music, but beware, can your pure heart handle the wrath of Mortiis? END

4.0 out of 5 stars Mortiis ~ Født Til Å Herske......., December 19, 2011

I remember quite a few years back when Mortiis first went out on his own people dismissed the guy as putting out ridiculous garbage... I was also guilty of writing him off without ever really giving him a chance... But that all changed when a friend of mine let me borrow this album... After listening to his other albums I can only say that "Født Til Å Herske" is his best... I am a fan of "Stargate" also but I feel nothing tops this album... I am glad I ended up giving Mortiis a chance his music is different but there is some good music to be heard on this disc... If I had to recommend an album which I thought was Mortiis' best effort "Født Til Å Herske" is it...
