5.0 out of 5 stars Glowing Strings from Underrated Czech June 12, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Josef Bohuslav Foerster (1859-1951) is usually consigned to the second tier of Czech composers. But you wouldn't guess it from these five glowing quartets. Listen to the shimmering fifteen minutes of the single-movement Quartet No. 3 and tell me if you aren't carried away. Foerster may not be the best melodist, but he sure knows what a string quartet should sound like.

It's easy enough to hear echoes of Dvorak and Smetana, especially in the first two echt-Romantic quartets, but the later works, steeped in the dissonances of late Beethoven, are profoundly original in texture and structure. Only Quartet 1 has the standard four movements. No. 3 has one; and the others each have three. In each instance, there seems to be exactly the right length and play of shifting emotion, to make a satisfying whole.

Also satisfying are the brief bonuses that fill out these two discs: two independent movements for quartet alone, and two early efforts, one that adds a bass, and another with harp.

The Stamitz Quartet (Stamic in the Czech spelling) does its compatriot proud. Even more than the composer, these crack musicians know what a string quartet should sound like.
