Product Description

What's it like to go from sitting two rows behind George W. Bush in church to explaining ass-less chaps to a two-year-old while wandering through the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco? Robin Dutton-Cookston grew up in a Texas town where the only chaps were found at the annual rodeo, yet she found herself peeing on the pregnancy stick while still unpacking the boxes in her hipster San Francisco apartment. Life in the mama-lane quickly straddled the great divide between red and blue states, and Robin learned to blend new age street smarts and deep-fried southern hospitality when raising her daughter. Take a trip to San Francisco Mamaland and sneak a peek into an odyssey of bumbling motherhood. It all takes place in a city where what passes as ordinary-same-sex mommies and daddies, creative facial piercings, rabid political rallies, and professional families who can't afford to buy a house-evokes gasps of shock and awe from folks back in Texas. On the way Robin covers universal parenting themes common to many mamas and daddies: breastfeeding chaos, naptime battles, life transitions, the quest for a sense of home, and the need teach her California child the subtle difference between east and west Texas barbeque sauce.

5.0 out of 5 stars A smart, funny and touching read for any mom., November 30, 2008
The Foggiest Idea had me laughing out loud. Robin's book is clever and thought provoking. She does a great job explaining those "only in San Francisco" and "only in Texas" moments with warmth and a wink. It's a good book if you're on the go because you can pick it up and read a story if you only have ten minutes to spare. Everyone can relate to her amusing tales of the surreal and mundane moments in motherhood and how important it is to stay focused on what matters most.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sweet, sassy essay collection, October 29, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Robin Dutton-Cookston offers a funny, often poignant, and most definitely sassy view of motherhood in this essay collection that covers well-worn ground - the amazing odyssey of new parenthood. Any mom reading this will relate to the exhaustion, the frustration, the insanity of having a baby in a house where there once was none. (That and the insane tyranny of other parents, particularly San Francisco parents who can be maddeningly precious) One poignant essay covers Dutton-Cookston's debate over whether to reveal the sex of their second child before she's born. She and her husband decide to hand her daughter a piece of paper that includes the coveted information -- and lets her break the news to the family. Others explore the commercialism of motherhood, the longing for home and the tyranny of urban baby haters. This collection is a joyful ride by a woman who lives life to the fullest, balancing motherhood's craziest moments with its most amazing.
