Great Hiking Guide to Maine,
By Jay (Portland, ME) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Foghorn Outdoors Maine Hiking: Day Hikes, Kid-Friendly Trails, and Backpacking Treks (Paperback)
I'm a native of Portland, and my friend (who's not originally from Maine) and I found this guide really helpful. Though I know the state well, I don't know all the little things about certain trails, such as whether certain trails allow dogs (important to my friend) or where a good place is to park the car (important to me, since I'm the one driving the two of us to these places). This guide tells you all that, and about all the hidden parking/entrance fees of certain trails. Highly recommended!

Good for a trip planned for Maine,
This review is from: Foghorn Outdoors Maine Hiking: Day Hikes, Kid-Friendly Trails, and Backpacking Treks (Paperback)
Offers quite a variety of hikes in Maine. Could use perhaps some more detailed maps. Have not got a chance to use yet as I am planning a trip for September 2007.

in Acadia,
This review is from: Foghorn Outdoors Maine Hiking: Day Hikes, Kid-Friendly Trails, and Backpacking Treks (Paperback)
This book offers great introduction to some of the best trails in Acadia. I used several recommendations from this book for my fall trip to Acadia and the trails were in deed quite awesome. Do get the book's recommended Acadia hiking maps, you can buy them in Acadia National Park's Hulls Cove Visitor Center. The detailed directions to the trail heads, whether there is a fee, whether pets are allowed, etc, are all useful information. Although not explicitly, it also lists some really good rainy day alternatives (unlike the granite mountains, the gravel carriage roads are good regardless of weather). Overall the book was especially useful to my trip. Although there are some long ones that may take 8-9 hours, Acadia trails are essentially all day hikes (or combination of different hikes). but don't let the low mileage fool you, some of these short granite mountain trails are very challenging. |
