Book Description

June 24, 2004 Aircraft of the Aces (Book 63)
Volume 53 in this series covered Fokker D VII aces from the four elite Jagdgeschwadern of the German army, and this follow-on volume charts the story of the many aces who flew the famed fighter in other units committed to combat in the final months of World War 1. D VII operations covered the entire Western Front, from the North Sea to the Swiss border. In the latter half of 1918 the Fokker was not only the mainstay of the army Jagdstaffeln, but also the most potent fighter flown by home defence Kests and the pilots of the German navy in Flanders. The D VII easily proved the equal of the many British, French, Belgian and American aircraft it met in combat, and served in such roles as day bomber interceptor, 'balloon buster' and nightfighter. Though handicapped by a lack of fuel and other supplies as the German war machine fell apart, aces such as Sachsenberg, Degelow and Rumey utilised the D VII to rack up impressive scores against consistently superior odds.

Editorial Reviews

Review

With Sopwith Triplane Aces of World War I: "This is the first time I have read examples of these books... If these books are representative, it must be a truly formidable series... Although both books complement each other, they both can stand alone as useful works describing this outstanding aircraft of World War I." -Mike Wollan, Aerodrome

With Sopwith Triplane Aces of World War I: "I'll just start right off and say that both of these books should be on your World War I reading list... [Both] of these books have extensive color plates and descriptions of each of the markings. Also, there are many photos of the pilots and their airplanes, including some interesting cockpit shots of the crude instruments they used." -Rob Auer, Aerodrome

From the Publisher

Osprey's Aircraft of the Aces series combines full colour artwork, the best archival contemporary photography, and first hand accounts from aces to bring history's greatest airborne conflicts to life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another solid AOA Title, August 16, 2003

Norman Franks a world war 1 aviation expert follows in the footsteps on his earlier volumes on Albatros, Nieuport, and Fokker Dr.1 aces with this new book on the Fokker DV11. This first volume on the Fokker biplane details the aces of the first four Jagdgeschwader in the German air force. These included the great aces Rudolf Berthold, Hermann Goring, Erich Lowenhardt, Karl Bolle, and many others. Like his earlier books for osprey Franks's new book is great. The colour plates are awesome. The German planes unique colour scemes are worth the price of the book alone. I hope Norman Franks continues to write books for osprey on world war 1.

I have a soft spot for WWI aircraft and build models of them. While this book isn't detailed in the way some of the Walk Around series are, there are still lots of pictures and color plates showing the various paint schemes and markings that were used by pilots of that era. That was what I was mainly interested in seeing and I got it. The history stuff in it is good, too, but really an overview more than anything truly in depth. For what I wanted from the book, it delivered and having seen it, would buy it again.

Osprey really did a great job here. Lots of photos. 40 profiles, with many overhead views. Good index. Very good info on what units were facing each other. Instead of saying, "Jasta 18 pilot shot down a SPAD," the book says "Jasta 18 pilot shot down a SPAD of the 13th Aero." Also tells what Jastas were on which fronts: British, French, or American.
