I purchased this chess set as a gift. I chose this over others due to price, materials (wood pieces and board), and portability.

When I received my package, it was packaged quite well, although I know how rough some postage handling can be. I mention this as there was a significant nick in one corner. It could have been (and probably was) due to mail delivery.
However, I am unsatisfied mainly with the design and durability of the chess set itself. I liked the idea of having the pieces held down inside of the set, without any of them rolling around. It is too bad that when all the pieces were placed within the elastic band, the band snapped or came undone on one side. Now the whole row doesn't sit well, with one piece rolling around within. Worse yet, when the larger pieces (such as queens or kings) are placed on opposite sides within the storage area of the set, the set does not completely close. This can be circumvented by arranging them without large pieces meeting each other on the other side. A minor disadvantage but still notable.

It is interesting that my set was ordered "new" but came without shrink wrap or any sort of seal. Maybe I was sent a return or a factory second, but either way I wouldn't really know without purchasing and comparing another set. Due to the unavoidable flawed storage design, that seems highly unlikely.

With that said, the set itself is nice. You get what you pay for, however it is disappointing to have this one with a broken band, when we haven't even used it yet. However, it is certainly possible I was shipped a model that someone had returned, so take this review with a grain of salt.

Overall this set seems to be made really cheaply. Pieces are nice but the board is flimsy and easily chipped.

My children (8 & 9) just started playing chess and I like that this comes with it's own carrying case. The pieces are kind of light weight, but it's what I expected.
