5.0 out of 5 stars Totally worth the price! Very convenient and helpful., August 21, 2006
I'm not one to write reviews typically. But this is literally one of the best items I ever purchased. We live on the 3rd floor of an apartment building that has an elevator but our car is parked in the parking garage which seems like MILES away when you are hauling heavy groceries to the house. This cart takes care of all the agony of that.

I also use it to take 3 large loads of laundry at a time - plus detergent bottles - to the laundry room (which also seems like MILES away when you have to carry a sack of laundry over your back or - even worse - have some laundry basket digging into your hip). I also don't have to worry about anyone SEEING my dirty laundry as the cart is fully enclosed in a sturdy fabric and has a velcro-enclosed flap on top to completely cover up what's inside. I've also used the flap to protect my dry clothes on a rainy day as I've come back from the laundry room. I was soaked, but my clothes were still dry and clean. The flap is made of the same fabric so if you don't want to use it, you can just leave it hanging inside or outside the cart with no worries of it getting squished or ruined (even when the cart is folded up the fabric top is fine).

The wheels make for easy movement unless you have a particularly heavy load of groceries when it gets to be hard to maneuver. I am still giving it 5 stars though because even a grocery cart is hard to maneuver when it's full of heavy groceries.

The absolute BEST part about the VersaCart though, is the fact that it folds up to the size of a folded-up stroller. Unlike the metal carts (which have snagged my clothes by the way and do not fold up anywhere near as small as this one), you can store it in the hall closet in a space smaller than a vacuum. This was imperitive for us as we live in a small apartment with very little storage room.

I now keep the VersaCart in the trunk of my car for those spontaneous grocery trips and it's very easy to handle and get open and closed. It's lightweight too so I think even the elderly could handle it.

In fact, the ederly people in my complex (there are a lot of them) are all very jealous of my cart and many of them have asked what brand it is, etc. because they want one for themselves. A few people even stopped me when I took it to the swap meet and told me what a great idea and what a nice looking cart it is. It was great there too as it's much easier than carrying around your purchases all day. And my items were out of view and out of the hot sun as they were inside with the fabric top covering it. I highly recommend this cart to anyone and I think there are many uses for it. We just used it yesterday to take our recycling down to the car!

I'm only 35 but I have a bad back already so I have to be careful about carrying heavy stuff. So I highly recommend it for anyone who shouldn't carry heavy items, needs to travel far to the car, or anyone who wants to free up their hands more when they are doing chores.

V. Moore (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I live in New York City and use ths cart extensively for all my shopping - so it's a lot of walking and schlepping! The stroller-like foldaway design makes it much easier to run other errands without dragging around a bulkier cart (like - you can go to brunch with the cart and go shopping after). I do have issues with the construction and, like another reviewer, the height. I have to stoop to push it and I'm 5'8". Also - the back wheel attachment issue is a REAL problem. I am on my third cart because after 6 months the wheel axle will wear through the struts and wobble. It's useless after that. Because of this, the claim that it can carry up to 100 lb is bogus. 50 lb tops - and don't do that too often! The whole cart is made very sturdily except for the way the wheels are attached (a rod through a hole in the back legs). This is a serious flaw. If you are OK with paying $50 for a cart that will break after 100 or so trips -then go for it. If you live in a city and do a lot of shopping on foot - either resign yourself to spending this money for the fold-up convenience and "chicness" of the Versacart - or just stick to the old metal granny cart!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but..., August 31, 2005
By
We've had this cart for about 2 years. It was working fine, until the back wheels started to wobble. Once that started the cart lasted 2 trips. The mounting for the back wheels is not superb, and once they go, that's it. Maneuvering it around the grocery store can be a pain as it has some trouble turning, even though the front wheels swivel.

I've never had one of the chrome type carts where none of the wheels swivel, so I'm sure this is easier to maneuver, but don't expect it to handle like a grocery store cart. I'm not sure if those chrome carts are more durable or not, but they look like they might be. Also, it's kind of short, so if you're of 5'9" or taller expect to bend down to push it. One last thing, since the front wheels swivel and the cart is not super stable, it's nearly impossible to push with one hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Shopping Cart, May 5, 2005
This is the best shopping cart that we have ever owned. We have owned one for about 5 years and not only is it great for grocery shopping, but we have also used it many times for moving small heavy objects, such as boxes, books, rugs, etc. it holds so much and is very strong. And to add to it's usefulness, it folds up for storage in an out-of-the-way corner or the car.

2.0 out of 5 stars metal construction broke and poor maneuvering, March 18, 2007
This review is from: Folding Shopping Cart - with Liner and Lid (Blue) (37"H x 18"W x 23"D) (Kitchen)
When I first received the VersaCart, I was very pleased. However, within a few months (weekly grocery trips), the wheels started to ride on their edges. It was very difficult to push. Then the right front wheel/metal bar curled under and broke off!

It was still under warranty, so they sent a brand new one. Unfortunately, the same thing happened, and now I'm looking for a different brand.

I don't believe it can easily hold 100 pounds, and it doesn't maneuver well over the occasional bump in streets or on sidewalks.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Handy Cart!, December 28, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Folding Shopping Cart - with Liner and Lid (Blue) (37"H x 18"W x 23"D) (Kitchen)
I bought this cart back in August for my elderly mother as her Christmas gift. She needed something to carry her groceries from the car to her home. The cart comes in a long box already assembled. All you have to do is snap on the two front wheels, open it up and it's ready to go. The removeable bag is a nice, heavyweight, water resistant canvas with a cover. The cart moves very easily on carpet. The wheels move in all directions making steering it quite simple and effortless which is very nice for the elderly. I liked it so much I just bought one for myself. It can be used for anything: gardening, laundry, groceries, pick-up caddy, anything! I LOVE IT! I would suggest you buy yours from Amazon from Mr. Sinclair of Zabaleta. He's the best!

5.0 out of 5 stars got our $ worth 100s times over with this cart, March 4, 2007
This review is from: Folding Shopping Cart - with Liner and Lid (Blue) (37"H x 18"W x 23"D) (Kitchen)
We bought this cart (different colored wheels) in 2002 and have used it 4 or 5 times a week since. We even moved apartments partially using one. We regularly abuse it by piling in so much weight (groceries - 6 gallons of liquids plus everything else) and it withstood that. It is also great for laundry. I hardly ever write reviews but I love this item so much I'm making an exception. We finally need a new one since a front wheel is starting to bow, but I am probably not exaggerating to say we've pushed it 50-70 miles in all of our trips to groceries stores (in NYC, where we walk everywhere).

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab cart - have had for at least 7 years, December 25, 2009
By
Kathy (Washington DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Folding Shopping Cart - with Liner and Lid (Blue) (37"H x 18"W x 23"D) (Kitchen)
I live in a high rise apartment bldg, walk everywhere when possible, and live across the street from a Costco and large supermarket. I use this cart every few days for shopping, occasionally for laundry, and for moving odds and ends. It is much, much better than the metal carts available because:

Pros:

- it has four sets of wheels so it is very maneuverable and you can load more weight than you can with a two wheel cart;

- things don't fall out given the canvas construction; I lost a fair number of apples and oranges in a metal cart I used to own;

- it's a lot quieter than the metal carts;

- I feel like it is a safer cart to operate. Years ago I was pushing my metal cart across the parking lot and the wheels caught a small lip in the pavement, this caused the cart to stop short unexpectedly and me to go flying over the handlebars so to speak. I suffered some bad bruises, cuts, a fair amount of embarrassment, and a badly damaged cart. As a result, I swore off the metal carts and bought this one and have never looked back.

- it's quite compact and easy to store; very similar in size to your standard baby stroller; no problem bringing it on metro and the like.

- takes a surprising amount of weight so long as you are sensible in how you load it; I've used it for the megapacks of water and Starbucks frappucinos from Costco without a problem but I wouldn't put something equally heavy if the load couldn't be equally distributed across the bottom. It will easily handle 4+ large sacks of groceries but keep in mind that at the bottom of the cart is an X metal structure with the canvas "cube" resting on top of it so putting something narrow and extremely heavy in one of the quadrants is not such a good idea. That said, I think people who are experiencing bending wheels and the like are simply overloading it and probably running the cart over very tough terrain. I've abused mine for 7 years and it shows little wear and tear but I keep in mind it's limitations.

- one can also hang bags off the handles if you fill up the main compartment;

- the canvas holding "cube" can be easily removed for cleaning as well as be used as a very large bag. I've never had a reason to remove it.

Cons:

- I'm only 5'2" so the height works well for me but I can definitely see how people much taller would find it to be awkwardly short for them.

- The plastic "hook" that keeps the the two handles together when in storage is poorly designed so it usually pops open on its own. Not a big deal since the cart will still remain quite compact on its own without the hook but it would have been nice if the manufacturer had field tested this component a little more. I may use a mini bungee cord in its place if I ever come across a suitable one.

Overall, I have got my money's worth out of this cart and I'm always telling the folks in my building that they should buy this cart whenever I see them struggling with their metal carts. Sure, the manufacturer should have put on larger, rubber wheels and used less plastic, but for the price and convenience it is a bargain. If the manufacturer were to produce a version using higher quality grade materials that practically guaranteed indestructability, I'd be very interested but for now, my cart serves my needs very well.

4.0 out of 5 stars I like it better than the traditional all-metal carts, but....., June 29, 2008
This review is from: Folding Shopping Cart - with Liner and Lid (Blue) (37"H x 18"W x 23"D) (Kitchen)
I like this better than the traditional metal carts, but it has it's drawbacks... When loaded down, it can be difficult to maneuver the front swivel wheels. Also, the metal frame DEFINITELY needs to be made of stronger, sturdier metal bars. I found that the bars with the handles on them bent slightly over time, and when I collapsed it shut, the little clip that is supposed to clip the two handles together to keep the unit shut wouldn't clip because the bars were not in alignment anymore. After that, the right handle broke off completely. If they would use a sturdier metal, this unit would be perfect. I do love the canvas as opposed to the traditional metal carts, and it even has a velcro lid/cover, pretty nifty... Overall, I would recommend, but it does need improvement, and *don't overload it* weight-wise...

UPDATE: 07/24/08. I emailed Versacart and they asked me if icould send a picture of the broken handle. I used my digital camera and emailed them and pic as well as a copy of my Amazon purchase receipt. They immediately Fed-Exed me a brand new Versacart free of charge. I am very impressed about that and really appreicate that they did that, however they really need to improve the strength of the steel bars so that these carts won't break in the first place...

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest folding carts EVER, February 11, 2007
Ive owned many diffrent folding carts and this is the BEST for it's size. I buy mine from a vendor in NJ through Amazon and I've been very happy. The cart can have some wheel problems but you just need to be a little careful with them - the wheels on those metal carts don't last as long as these. The only cart better is the Wonder Wheeler which is better for bigger loads. By the way, I regularly OVERLOAD these carts and they manage just fine. This one folds down to a tiny size for stashing in a closet or car. The one problem I've had is the thing that connects the bag to the cart breaks but I just pull it together with a plactic cable tie and keep going. ANY minor deficits are very much overcome by the tremendous convenience.
