A pleasant introduction to Marin Marais, February 20, 2001

I first became interested in Marin Marais after seeing _Tous les matins du monde_ several years ago. The supple tone of the French viol fascinated me; soon I had bought several Jordi Savall recordings based on his performances for the movie. After listening to those disks for some time, I bought this SIMAX disk. I wish I had bought it earlier. While Dreyfus does not match Savall's wonderful performances, Dreyfus' intellectual competence makes the crisp performances on this disk completely enjoyable and much less draining to listen to than the swooning performances of Savall--sometimes overbearingly so. This recording also does not relegate the harpsichord to the background as do so many of Savall's, and I appreciate the evenness such a decision provides. With such a balance, one can appreciate the aesthetic pairing of the two instruments beyond the simple conventions of the age. In all, while this disk is not outstanding, it is perhaps the most pleasant intrduction to Marais (rather than to Savall) I know of.
