4.0 out of 5 stars Love Dave Van Ronk's lessons hate Mel Bay's Transcriptions, August 28, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Folk and Blues Fingerstyle Guitar (Paperback)
For starters, I've fallen hard for Dave Van Ronk.

His style and class were truly one of a kind and I'd been feeling bummed out that we never met.

...but now it feels like we have.

He's somehow recorded as if he's right in the room giving you a lesson. And this is full-on Dave Van Ronk. Telling stories in-between explaining chords. It is truly as if you're sitting in his living room in the Village and he's made you tea.

Mel Bay's transcriptions, on the other hand, are HORRIBLE.

Somewhere down the line guitar tablature was standardized and Mel never got the menu.

Notes are highlighted with a number and a line going through a string.

"Is this line going through the 5th or the 6th string?" WHO KNOWS?!?

All I know is it's impossible to read from a distance. Especially if you're wearing glasses.

I almost want to throw the book in the garbage and keep the CDs.

I really wanted to rate this lower but I couldn't. The content on the CDs is just that good.

In fact if the CDs came without the book I would give it five stars easy.
