4.0 out of 5 stars Old-timey music from the Great Lakes..., December 17, 2001
An interesting disc of old Library of Congress recordings... It's all good stuff, although I was surprised by the preponderance of English and Celtic material, and the absence of German and Nordic folk songs... Does this reflect the cultural bias of the folks who collected these recordings in the 1940s, or is there perhaps another volume in the works? At any rate, if you like old-timey stuff, this disc holds up pretty well... even includes a few logging songs of local origin!

1.0 out of 5 stars This is NICHT (not) Wisconsin's Folk Heritage., February 26, 2003
By A Customer
Did you know that more than half the population of Wisconsin is German-American? I'm not claiming other ethnic groups that arrived later didn't contribute to Wisconsin Culture but at least half of the CD should have contained some really old German Wisconsin Folk Hits. The people who created this CD must think that all of us in Wisconsin are stupid. Wisconsin is the land of Dairy, Farming and most of all "Beer and Brats" It reminds me of the way the television sitcom Happy Days presented a complete absence of German-Americans on the program. This was pretty ridiculous considering that more than half the population of Milwaukee is German and famous for it. In the 1950's you couldn't walk down a street in Milwaukee without hearing the German language spoken. Even to this day the City is filled with German Street names and Buildings. The Best German Restaurants are in Milwaukee. The sitcom Happy Days and this CD are exactly the same, they both present a false image. If you like living in the fictional world of some Anti-German-American person in the Hollywood/Music Biz who wants to delete the presence of the 60 million German-American people from American History, this CD will be perfect for you. Germans, Scandinavians and Polish speak up!!
