Unmatched musicality!, February 15, 2004
This review is from: Folk Songs of Britain (Audio CD)
I grew up listening to this album long before the age of the CD, and I'm delighted to see it is now available through that more durable medium. This album from the late fifties was recorded early in the long history of the Deller Consort--an extraordinary ensemble of bass, baritone, tenor, counter tenor (Alfred Deller himself), and two sopranos. Every one of these soloists is an outstanding musician in his/her own right, and together they create music that is virtually unmatched. They are, of course, aided by Ralph Vaughan Williams' gorgeous settings of traditional British folk songs. In addition to the many a cappella choral renditions, this album also includes a number of solos for counter tenor and lute, which are beautifully performed by Deller.
