5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I am using this book with vocal students and it is really great - the arrangements are interesting without being weird and the piano accompaniment is truly beautiful.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ok but not really worth it
It's an ok set of folk songs from around the globe. All translated into english with the accompaniment dumbed down. kind of boring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful arrangements of common folk songs, March 8, 2010

This volume has very beautiful arrangements of some popular folk songs. "The Water Is Wide" is beautiful and flowing. Some of the arrangements are jazzy (Follow the Drinkin Gourd and a few others) and some are more traditional arrangements (such as Cindy). Great book with nicely played CD. Sometimes CDs are hard to sing with due to the piano players interpretation of the tempo markings, but most on this CD are good. One of my high school students didn't look very thrilled when I mentioned doing a folk song, but after hearing these arrangements she was excited about it. Great book for junior high and high school singers. Great folk song collection for voice studios. Nice recital, concert, and contest pieces.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Source for Beginning Singers, September 24, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a good book for beginning singers. It doesn't have as many songs as some similarly priced books. But the music is written clearly and there is plenty of room for making notes -- even though some notes are already provided regarding tempo and volume, it is good to have room for personal reminders about phrasing and attack.

Its always nice to have a book like this in the collection. There are others out there that can provide more songs but if you need to lug them around, it gets a little difficult.

As long as you aren't expecting a comprehensive collection of folk songs (if one could even exist!), you will not be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, November 26, 2011
I was looking for the full version of "The Water is Wide," but thought it would be good to have some other ones also. I play the piano by ear and by sight. The included CD would really help someone who plays mostly by ear; although, the CD is only music, no singing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginning singers, July 16, 2011

My choir teacher used this book for our solos for the UIL Solo Contest. I sang Simple Gifts and I though it was a simply wonderful arrangement of the song, albeit a bit easy for me. But when it says "Medium High Voice", BELIEVE IT. I'm not sure, but I think Simple Gifts went up to at least a high G above the treble clef staff. The CD is also very useful for practicing and accompaniment.

5.0 out of 5 stars great resource, March 16, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have bought every version of this book, and our school continues to get great critiques for the song choices and the singer. There is a good variety of well know and obscure. They are longer so, generally need to be for mature singers.

5.0 out of 5 stars good for beginners, March 11, 2007

This review is from: Folk Songs for Solo Singers, Vol. 1: Medium High (Paperback)
This is an excellent book for beginning students since many of the songs are already familiar. Some are easier for early beginners and there are some that are more challenging. These arrangements are still pretty high with notes up to treble d and e. Very nice arrangements, and I'm glad I purchased it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners!, January 22, 2007
This is one of the best beginner vocal repertoire collections that I have found. Most other collections that I own have many songs that I rarely or never use, leaving a selected few songs that are of any value to me. I have used and love each song in this book.
