A literary classic from Japan,

The author was perhaps the pre-eminent Japanese folklorist of his time. In any case he belongs with such greats as Kunio Yanagita and Ichiro Hori. The tales in this work were selected and translated from his much larger collection in Japanese. It is very accessible to the general reader and valuable to more serious scholars as well. Especially helpful to the latter is a table in the back which classifies the tales by both the international standard index of tale types and of tale motifs. No one interested in Japanese religion, culture, or literature should be without this book.
