About the Artist

Folk Uke is the musical collaboration of Cathy Guthrie and Amy Nelson. The band was born in the year 2000 when Amy took Cathy to buy her first ukulele in Leucadia, CA. Once armed with instruments, these girls became a force to be reckoned with. Most of the time, Amy plays guitar and Cathy plays uke. If you’ve seen them live, you know that they like to joke about their musical abilities or lack thereof, but don’t let them fool you. Not only are they clever lyricists, but, they’ve been known to switch instruments from song to song. Each mistake is carefully crafted to make the audience think they aren’t very skilled, but I think we all know better… Those girls are amazing! Chickenaliza (cub reporter for F.U.N.) We were inspired by many of the agreeable greats of the Folk, Country, and Americana genres. Our favorite chords are C, F, and G. So, if you’d like to play along, well, it’s that easy. Of our infamous families, the two of us had been the musical holdouts until we gave into the force and began writing and playing music together. We penned songs such as ‘Shit Makes the Flowers Grow’, ‘Knock Me Up’, and ‘Motherfucker Got Fucked Up’ and we thought, “What a crime it would be to keep these national treasures to ourselves. How can we keep silent when we are the voice of a nation?” You may not hear us on the radio, since our songs have been described as “inappropriate”, “off-color”, “not ready for mainstream” and “NSFW”(Not Safe For Work). Our debut EP, ‘Folk Uke’, is self-titled, as are we. It was produced by Abe Guthrie and ourselves. “Family values” would be the common chord in this unprecedented collection of songs, since we let our Dads, Willie Nelson and Arlo Guthrie, take the solos and chime in when they were compelled to do so. It was the least we could do for our executive producers. It made them feel good and that made us feel good; so we took the chance that it would make thousands of people feel good and we printed thousands of copies. Folk Uke is the debut self-titled release from the daughters of two great American songwriters, a collaboration between Cathy Guthrie (daughter of Arlo) and Amy Nelson (daughter of Willie). Nelson and Guthrie combine beautiful harmonies with a traditional folk sound and throw in edgy but humorous lyrics. Matt Leasor from American Songwriter Magazine says, 'Humour is the best part about folk music, the twist of the lyric when its nearly limerick verse. This is likely to be the best folk record out today, and I'm not folking around'.

The mixture between sweet voices and disturbing lyrics makes this a hauntingly original band, in a world of bland music and silicon breasts. Them music is simple, lending itself to a contrast with the beautiful voices. The look of shock on my face when I first listened to them must have been hilarious. Pay careful attention to these two ladies, they might surprise you. Oh, one last thing. If you are offended by pretty much anything, you might be better off finding some kind of classical boringness to fill out your musical monotony. If you enjoy thoughts of mangy buffalo's roaming through the wilderness, then this might be right up your alley. Hilariety with some off the wall concepts and laguage usage. I'd give it two fingers up.

I first heard about Folk Uke in the Boston Phoenix and had to hear it for myself! I definitely wasn't disappointed because what you have on this CD are some hilarious tongue-in-cheek songs done by two daughters of famous artists. Not that this should be the selling point, because had I not heard who this was, I still would have been intrigued (but to be honest, it made me more interested!). As for the songs, they're light folky little ditties sung in lilting harmonies with clever lyrics (and at times offensive to some people). Knock Me Up is one of my favorites, as well as In Case We Die. And there's a great cover of I Still Miss Someone by Johnny Cash. All in all it's a great CD that I would recommend to anyone interested in hearing something fun and different!

Amy and Cathy are truly incredible musicians and this album shows it perfectly. It is simple yet powerful which, to me, is the best sign of great music. There is nothing better than allowing true artists to be themselves with no studio cover up. They could sit down anywhere, any time and make beautiful music. How refreshing! Yet, not only are they great musicians, they are great people. Keep it up!
