5.0 out of 5 stars This ain't your parents folk music., May 12, 2005

The mixture between sweet voices and disturbing lyrics makes this a hauntingly original band, in a world of bland music and silicon breasts. Them music is simple, lending itself to a contrast with the beautiful voices. The look of shock on my face when I first listened to them must have been hilarious. Pay careful attention to these two ladies, they might surprise you. Oh, one last thing. If you are offended by pretty much anything, you might be better off finding some kind of classical boringness to fill out your musical monotony. If you enjoy thoughts of mangy buffalo's roaming through the wilderness, then this might be right up your alley. Hilariety with some off the wall concepts and laguage usage. I'd give it two fingers up.

I first heard about Folk Uke in the Boston Phoenix and had to hear it for myself! I definitely wasn't disappointed because what you have on this CD are some hilarious tongue-in-cheek songs done by two daughters of famous artists. Not that this should be the selling point, because had I not heard who this was, I still would have been intrigued (but to be honest, it made me more interested!). As for the songs, they're light folky little ditties sung in lilting harmonies with clever lyrics (and at times offensive to some people). Knock Me Up is one of my favorites, as well as In Case We Die. And there's a great cover of I Still Miss Someone by Johnny Cash. All in all it's a great CD that I would recommend to anyone interested in hearing something fun and different!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Music, Incredible People, September 1, 2006

Amy and Cathy are truly incredible musicians and this album shows it perfectly. It is simple yet powerful which, to me, is the best sign of great music. There is nothing better than allowing true artists to be themselves with no studio cover up. They could sit down anywhere, any time and make beautiful music. How refreshing! Yet, not only are they great musicians, they are great people. Keep it up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Meek, but Evil... {heh!}, July 2, 2006
This review is from: Folk Uke (Audio CD)
Listening to this EP with my 14-year-old made me realize how lyrically dangerous these latest musical prodigies are. Cathy Guthrie and Amy Nelson pose in wispy, almost ethereal voices, simple cords, and, like Nellie Mckay, have a way with verses that make you do an aural double-take if you weren't paying attention. And attention you'll pay. My daughter was doubled-up in laughter, then amusedly surprised when I praised the lyrics of '{bleeped}ed up {bleep}{bleeper}.'
Gotta keep your kiddos on their toes. And these two incredible singers had better not be flashes in the family skillet -- they clearly have a lot to say and give for the musical and political communities.

I'm still trying to figure out who these gals are, but I absolutely LOVE their music! And I don't talk like they sing! I've got a couple of co-workers who will love this! The tunes are catchy while the lyrics to a couple of these songs are more than a little nontraditional!

5.0 out of 5 stars Alternative Folk, May 21, 2005

It has been said that it you have had a bad week in the world the song to sing is Leadbelly's "On a Monday." I would suggest that if you don't want to wait for an entire week to go bad the song to sing the moment things go awry is the second cut on Folk Uke's CD the name of which shall remain nameless since this is a "family" review. While the songs with the controversial lyrics will get the most attention, the non-controversial tunes such as Try to Say Goodbye, Fences, and In Case we Die are wonderful and equally worth a listen.
Play these tunes on your iPod in the car and passengers are going to first ask, "what did they say?" and then say "play it again."

5.0 out of 5 stars You Too Will Fall In Love!, December 29, 2005
This review is from: Folk Uke (Audio CD)
My daughter Becky and I were lucky enough to get to see Arlo Guthrie and Willy Nelson in New Orleans at the same time for a benifit for Katrina victims. A dream ticket duo for us.

A year ago I had come across an old copy of Alice's Restaraunt and gave to my 20 year daughter, Becky. She's been riding around for a year with it in her car CD player, playing it for her friends.

My mother had given me Willy Nelson's autobiography nearly 20 years ago, though 40 years ago I used to sit with her and listen to Willy's LP's when he had short hair.

I guess the point is the whole family feels like family to Arlo and Willy. But the surprise is that Arlo's youngest daughter Cathy and Willy's youngest daughter Amy have formed a Folk music group. They were the hit of the New Orleans charity that was supposed to be headline by their fathers.

The other point is that their music is addictive, yes good, original over the top, funny, and im sorry, addictive. So buyer beware this music will be stuck in you brain for a long long time.

Here's a tip, got to indie911.com; you can listen and see.
