Theodore Bikel was a one of a kind. Born in Austria (pre-Nazi era), raised in Palestine (pre-Israel), and educated at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, he was also the most versatile of all folk singers. He taught himself guitar at an early age, then expanded his skills through jam sessions with other great musicians. He speaks 7 or 8 languages, but sings in 25 or so. His accent, no matter what language, is accurate because he spent years traveling throughout the world and learning from the best folk musicians. Good guitar work, great singing.

Old Times Revisited,

This review is from: Folksinger's Choice (Audio CD)
Way back in the fifties I became aware of Theo. Bikel's work in folk songs of many languages. I recently became interested in looking into his more recent work. I have enjoyed his later releases and was interested in comparing his current "voice" with older times.
This CD, "A Folksingers Choice" does take me back to the earlier time. These old recordings of Bikel, re-released on CD, confirm my memory of the earlier time. I don't find the work as great as I had remembered it, but still quite enjoyable.

I had this in vinyl but couldn't find it in CD after I got rid of my turntable. I was so glad to finally find it on CD. It's a collection of wonderful, whimsical, funny (in a droll way) folk songs that I'd never heard anywhere else that have became long-time favorites for me. It's Bikel at his finest - wonderful clear, rich voice and excellent guitar - fun to sing along with.
