This review is from: The Folktale Cat (Paperback)
I have read many cat folktale collections and this one is by far the best in terms of variety, thoroughness, and entertainment value. It keeps its focus firmly on felines and covers all genres from fantastical to epic to thrilling to humorous. All of the stories are compelling, entertaining, and portray the cat as the grand if mystifying creature it is.
The anthology samples tales from many different times, settings and cultures ranging from this century to many centuries past (highlighting the universal appeal of cats). I read many stories in here that I have not found elsewhere. To that end, the editors have mercifully rewritten the more obfuscating tales into modern English -- all the while retaining their original natures (if you've ever read old English, you know how frustrating it can be). I'd estimate it has over 30 stories in all, each of them wonderful. I devoured this book up within a night because I couldn't put it down. It never gets boring or tedious and it never loses its focus on cats. If you're looking for a cat book, this one is /the/ book to have. |
