The folktales of Ireland are many, ancient, and wonderful to hear. So you have quite a few English-language books about them. I bought this one, "Folktales of Ireland" by Sean O'Sullivan, after hearing that it's considered the best for bringing the feel of the Irish language to us in English (the original tales were handed down in Irish, generation to generation). I was not disappointed! The writing has a wonderful vividness and exactness of expression and description, and a great sense of humor that goes right along with the drama of the stories. It's a great read! I felt sad to come to the end of the book. I wish there were more by O'Sullivan. I'm not a folktale expert at all (I see on the back cover that Sean O'Sullivan definitely was!), but I can say that this is a terrific book for anyone who wants to read an Irish folk tale and get the real flavor of the full story. |
